Nightmares

She shoots up in her bed
Guttural cry coming from her lips
Her form, shaking and sweating
The terrifying images
Still flashing before her eyes

Nightmares are common, normal even
Says her doctor
A side effect from the withdrawal
Now, as she pants in the middle of
The night, she wonders
If getting clean is even worth it

But then she feels the hand on her shoulder
Arms wrapping around her frame
Pulling her back down into the sheets
Those lips, whispering comforting
Words into her ear

And she remembers why she's doing this
Why she puts up with the nightmares
She's doing it for her family, her friends
But mostly, she does it for him

And she would go through thousands of nightmares
If it meant he would be at her side every time
To bring her back to reality
