It's not even been two minutes that I was finally starting to fall asleep. The sense of falling that everyone get when they begin to get into that sweet space where we lose all the consciousness was just starting to seep into me when I was rudely pulled out by the ringtone of my mobile. Never have I hated this device more than now. It was 1 AM when I decided to stop preparing for the interview that I have in the morning. It was difficult for me to simply sleep with all the concepts running in my mind and with the feeling of nervousness thinking about the interview.
I picked up my dancing mobile from the small table next to bed. This thing is dancing merrily vibrating with all its might, so happy to disturb my sleep.
The screen displayed Dad and immediately worry filled my mind. What could have happened for dad to call me this late? Many worst scenarios ran through my head. Not giving them the chance to fuel more, I slide through the screen.
Before my dad could say anything, I asked him calmly, keeping worry and anxiety out of my voice. "Dad, is everything ok?"
First thing I heard was his tired sigh, "Your brother had an accident, Selene," He said. With my mobile glued to my ear with my shoulder, I rush to get dressed still listening to him. "Your mom is with me at the hospital and she's really worried for Shawn. I know you have interview tomorrow but it will really help your mom if you'd be here."
"I am coming dad," I picked up my car keys, got out of my apartment, locked the door and dashes towards the elevator. "Tell me the address of the hospital and how's Shawn? Is he alright?" I asked just then the elevator doors opened.
I ran to my car as dad told me that my stupid and annoying as hell brother had few fractures and bruises and concussion on top of that. He gave me the address and reassuring him that I would there as soon as possible, I started my car and drove out of my apartment building.
Exactly half an hour later, I parked at the hospital. Then ran to the receptionist, asked the young lady in which room my brother is. As I was leaving from there she smiled at me with sympathy. I looked at her with confusion. Why was she giving me those looks? I did not come here with tears running out of my eyes like a waterfall!
My brother was on the fourth floor. I looked for the elevator, I found it just when it was about to close. I ran towards it shouting for someone to stop it. Luckily a nice nurse held it for me. I gave her a smile as I stepped inside.
There were only few people inside the elevator. One middle aged man with a son and the nice nurse. The father was telling his son about his little sister who would be in this world very soon. How small she would be and that he being the big brother has to always take care of her. It was sweet to see that boy looking at his father with all the seriousness a roughly six year old boy could muster and nodding all throughout.
I got down on fourth floor and searched for my family. I found dad holding mom in his arms, comforting her. My mother is like all the other mothers in world. One slight nick to the finger and whole first aid box would be out. So I can understand what my mom would be feeling right when her little boy got hurt.
"Oh, mom, relax that chipmunk would be fine. He wouldn't leave a chance to annoy me," I gave my mom a big hug. The smile she gave me soothed my heart. My mother doesn't look good without a smile on her face. I turned to dad, "What did the doctor say?"
"He's going to be in the hospital for four weeks. Doctor has hopes for a speedy recovery," Dad said relief evident on his face.
"How did this happen?" I did not even know how he got into an accident.
"Your brother was returning home from office party. A drunk driver broke the red signal and smashed his car into Shawn's. The driver side took most of the impact. The air bag came out in time and Shawn came out alive with fractures and concussion but the driver was not that lucky, he is on the other side of the corridor. The last time I heard the nurses talking about him going into coma." Dad shook his head, "He is not in a good shape. Don't know his family knows about him or not."
"Where are the police?" I asked looking here and there to find them.
"They left after talking to us and the doctor," Dad replied.
The clock is showing 4' clock. For two hours I waited for the doctor to come out and let us see Shawn. When the doctor assured of his health and allowed us to see him, we were relived and finally a genuine smile came on mom's lips. After seeing my brother on the hospital bed and leaving him a message to see when he wakes up on his fractured arm and leg, Dad and I came out of room to let Mom see her son to her heart's content.
"You should go and have some sleep. You have interview in few hours and your mom and me want some good news after this," Dad took me into his arms and squeezed the hell out of me. He is a giant teddy bear with immense strength. His whole frame swallows me every time he gives me his bone crushing hugs.
Nodding into his chest, I came out of the hug. "I'll just get some coffee for both of you. You look exhausted," I made him sit on the bench and went in search for the coffee machine.
With two hot cups coffee, I made my way back to Dad. Suddenly, I saw a police man standing outside a room. Curious, if the patient inside was the one that crashed his car into my brother's, I tried to see his face without alerting the police man. I just managed to see his brown hair. With my thoughts on that man, I didn't have my eyes to the front and crashed into someone. Thanks to my quick reflex, I managed get the hot coffee out of, my and the person I crashed into, way and saved us from getting scalded. But for that I have to sacrifice my coffee and let it fall on the ground.
The impact of the collision had pushed me pushed back slightly and I would've fallen down on the floor if not for that man. He immediately wound his arm around my waist, pulling me flush against him knocking my breath away as my chest collide with his hard one.
"Easy," his low voice reached my ears. My eyes opened to only to notice that my head was against his shoulder. Instinctively, I stepped back to have some distance between us. I looked up to him, already an apology forming in my mind when I noticed the most ridiculously beautiful and mesmerizing blue eyes staring at me. For a second my breath got stuck in my throat.
The movement of his hand on my waist jolted me. "I am so sorry. Its my fault. I was not walking looking ahead. You didn't get burn from the coffee, did you?" I asked all the while trying very hard to not stare at him too much.
His fingers trailed from my waist to my back all the way to the other side and finally left my body. It didn't feel deliberated; at the same time I felt all his movement in slow motion when in fact in reality it was just few seconds. He raised his left hand and there they were. My small coffee cups sitting cozily in his palm. My bewilderment must have shown on my face as he answered my unspoken question the next minute, "I have quick reflexes," and witnessed the next beautiful thing on his face, his smile. It transformed his face completely, making it all the more beautiful.
I took the cups from his hand, "Thank you for this and sorry for bumping into you."
He just nodded and left. When I turned to look at him once more, he was nowhere. He must have turned to the right. I shook my head to get rid of this weird experience and the effect it made on me. Moreover, it's very unlikely that I would meet him again. For now I have to get some sleep in order get the job.
