Her voice was sweet, I thought as I untied the ropes and bindings from her, like untying a ribbon from a Christmas present. Her skin was cold but then again I always remembered it to be icey. I heard the soft pitter-patter of feet and immediately jumped to the door and locked it so no intruders could make their entrance. I walked back to Avery and finished untying her. She grabbed her wrists and rubbed them, showing me that the ropes had been tight. She let out a soft moan as I helped her up and carried her to the only window, opening it quietly. The gun had had a tracker in it so as soon as I pulled the trigger it signalled the men and women hiding outside to come and collect the body and myself. Only, that wasn't my plan. The microphones in the room weren't hidden well so I did every part of kiling her right only instead of shooting the bullet through her head, I shot it through the padlock behind the chair that held the ropes together. Now we had to sneak out in silence and without being seen. Avery questioned nothing, probably a blessing from her diagnosed mute-ness. I placed her on the ground outside, gently, and jumped down myself. I picked her up and ran back the direction I had come, to the train station. I timed it perfectly so the train was waiting for us. We were on and someone moved off their seat so Avery could sit.
"Thank you." I told them.
"Are you taking her to the hospital?" The man asked and I shook my head.
"I'm a doctor, as soon as I get back to my apartment I'll fix her up. I'm scared there'll be a que at the hospital and as good as I am at convincing people, the hospital can't give booked out rooms to people nor kick patients out." I explained as I sat Avery on the seat and sat next to her. I took off my leather jacket and pressed it against the wounds in her stomach and chest.
"She needs professional help though." The man protested.
"Just as well I'm a professional then." I sassed back and finally the grey-haired man shut up. The train stopped and I picked Avery's frail body up in my arms and ran off the train and towards my apartment. I ran until I got to the elevator and waited impatientlly while it took me to my level. I ran from the elevators doors and to my apartment, swiping the card through in record time and shoving the door open.
As we got inside I lay Avery down on my bed but stripped the duvet and linen off and wrapped a towel around the pillow. Avery let out a soft whimper as I cut her clothes off of her and cleaned her from the now drying blood. When I applied disinfectant on she moaned in pain and blacked out. The wounds weren't majorly deep just wide so she would need stiches. I got a bottle of water and a bowl, putting it by Avery's head while I found some steralised medicinal thread for her wounds. The bowl and water were for her if she woke up through the process and was sick. I began stitching the wound in her head with a steralised needle and a damp cloth to wipe away the blood that kept flowing. I tried to stitch it as fast as I possibly could so I didn't have a huge risk of poor Avery waking up during my surgery. Soon enough her head was stitched so I worked on the few wounds in her chest and stomach.
I heard a knock at the door of my apartment but ignored it. The knocking began to increase in strength and volume. I knew I had to finish stitching up Avery's wounds before I even thought about opening that door so I increased my pace and finished it. Shouting was coming from outside the door as I dropped the needle into a bowl of water and soap. I jumped to my feet and walked to the door, slightly worried at what might be behind the shaking wood.
"NATE!! NATHAN! It's me!" A male voice yelled as the door continued to shake and bang on it's hinges. He was going to break the door down in a minute. I recognised the voice though so I swung the door open and the man stumbled through. "Nathan you bloody idiot! Why didn't you answer when I first called! For gods sake there are people after you!" Jack yelled at me.
"Hold on, hold on. Who's after me?" I asked as I walked into the kitchen, getting as far away from my bedroom and Avery as possible.
"They are after you! Why didn't you turn off the light?" The younger man asked as if I was a completely different species all together.
"How did they get in? I bolted the door shut!" I yelled at Jack and he shook his head.
"We need to get out of here now. Where is she?" He asked and it was my turn to shake my head.
"Go grab the things from around the apartment we will need. I'll get Avery. You need to get the absolute essentials into the car." I instructed and he walked to the living room and lifted up the heavy cushions on the couch pulling out the weapons and ammunition, and every file we had to keep safe from the people around us. I walked back to my bedroom and cleaned Avery from blood quickly. I threw open my wardrobe doors and pulled out my ex-fiance's clothes for Avery. I could hear her stirring in the bed and I rushed over to the bed again, pushing her back down on the bed, stopping her from sitting up.
"Just lie here, don't move. If you feel like you need to throw up do it in the bowl. The water's here for you too." I instructed and she lay back down as I scrambeled back up to the wardrobe and chucked the clothes for Avery in a bag. I already had my things packed in case of something like this happening.
"Why are you packing women's clothes?" Avery struggled to say and I gave her a confused look. I thought she was mute, maybe it was just an act though.
"We need to leave, Avery. There are people after you, and there are people after me. If I leave you, you will be killed." I told her and she nodded slowly. I zipped the bag up and ran back to the living room where Jack was piling bags full of our documents and weapons. I dropped the bag with the rest and walked back to Avery who was sipping on the water bottle.
"Where are we going?" She asked when I walked back in, she had wrapped a towel around her so she wasn't pretty much naked. I threw a pair of Victoria's old skinny jeans on the bed along with matching bra and underwear and a long sleeve black shirt.
"I can't tell you that because I run the risk of someone hearing. Throw those clothes on. You are safe with me, Avery. I know you know that." I told her with a soft smile as I turned around and she stood up to pull the clothes on. I turned away from her as I saw her drop her towel. A crash came from the kitchen moments later and I swore under my breath as I turned around to come face to face with a completely naked Avery. I know it was the wrong time for dirty thoughts but I couldn't help it. She had an amazing body. I closed my eyes and ran to the door. "I am so sorry!" I called and then opened my eyes when I was on my way to Jack.
"What the fuck, Jack?" I yelled at him as I watched him sweep up broken glass. A broken picture frame was lying on the bench. I picked up the up turned photograph and saw it was the only photo I had of Victoria and I, I almost threw the picture at Jack myself. "You couldn't have been fucking careful, could you?" I growled and stomped off back to my room where Avery was fully dressed and sitting on my bed flipping through an artbook I had resting on my bedside table. I sat down next to her, still clutching the photograph and broken picture frame. She looked up at me and her eyes danced down to the photo and took it out of hands gently. Avery took the photo out of the frame and brushed it from broken glass and dust. She then placed the photo in a new page of my artbook and closed the paper with a soft smile.
"You are an amazing artist. Was that your girlfriend?" She asked and I shook my head, not wanting her to know so I stood up again and motioned for her to follow. I grabbed a couple of things from around the room and then walked out, with Avery on my heels. She was still clutching my sketch book and I couldn't be bothered trying to argue it out of her hands.
Jack had finished cleaning up the glass and had taken most of the bags to the car now so we walked straight out the door, leaving Jack to lock it on his way out.
He ran after us with the last bags in his calloused hands and his blonde hair getting in his eyes.
