(Inspired by Gildas' De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae, ch.1 & 3)

Poised finely in the divine balance Britain,
Enriched by two arms: the Thames, the Severn,
Fair England's cliffs, white as the snow, redder
Than ancient iv'ry, nor sapphire
More beautiful, a well painted picture,
A new bride in silken dress attired
With collars of rubies, em'ralds, di'monds.
Meadows where a myriad flowers
Burst into bloom, and its misty mountains,
Lucid fountains, a sleepy stream meanders
Down to the bright white sands and oceans.
