Gray Fullbuster

It was only my first day of school and I was already starting fights. The second my fist made contact with that asshole's face, I could see the scolding face of my older sister Ultear, hear the laughing of my cousin Lyon, and feel the harsh eyes of my aunt Ur. I expected that the guy would get up and start a fight with me, but instead, a female with scarlet red hair stepped between the two of us. She seemed angry, but she wasn't facing me, she was facing the guy. She started scolding him in front of the entire crowd.

I allowed my hands to fall to my sides. The guy deserved that public humiliation. From what I heard from a kid standing beside me when I noticed the fight, the guy was named Jackal and he was picking on the boy for being deaf. That's when I snapped. As someone who had a disabled Mother, I wasn't going to stand their and watch that shit. Eventually, the Jackal kid ran off. The scarlet haired female turned and I expected her to face me, but she faced the boy who was being picked on.

"Are you okay?" She signed quickly. I didn't know sign language, but I assumed she was asking him if he was okay. The boy nodded his head then turned to me. He waved his hand with a smile. I waved back. Then the boy placed his fingers to his lips. He waved his hand down, his smile growing. The girl with scarlet hair turned to look at me. "He's saying thank you." She said.

I stuttered at the sudden conversation, but I did say you're welcome. I said it slowly just in case the boy could read lips. Apparently, he could. The boy fixed his thick black glasses. He said in a rather rough voice, "Natsu." I smiled lightly. He was pretty damn cute.

"You must be Gray Fullbuster, the new transfer student." The red haired female said, but she was also signing. I nodded my head in confirmation. "I am Erza Scarlet, the Student Council President for the Seniors. This is Natsu Dragneel, a friend of mine, and this is Lucy Heartfilia, another friend." Erza placed her hands on Natsu and Lucy's shoulder with a smile on her face. She walked to stand by my side. "Get to class, both of you." She signed and said. Natsu and Lucy nodded their heads before running off.

Erza showed me around the school for my homeroom class. She wasn't one for wasting time. She wouldn't stop to answer questions, only gave a few word answers to my questions, and showed me as many places as she could. She also explained the rules. She explained to me that the school was rather lenient towards things. She also told me that because I was standing up for Natsu, I wouldn't get in trouble for decking Jackal in the face. The most important rules were that you couldn't skip class without a pass, you could only eat lunch once a day, no going to the roof without teacher permission, and no graphic PDA.

Once Erza's tour was finished, she dismissed me to my class. English. When I walked inside, the teach, Mr. Capricorn, introduced me briefly. Once I was finished telling my name and where I was from, Mr. Capricorn told me to sit wherever I wanted. I spotted Lucy sitting at a rounded table with a couple other people. I speed walked to her table and sat down next to her.

"Hey, Gray!" Lucy chirped happily when I sat down. I gave her a nod before looking at the people also sitting at the table. There was a rather short female was messy blue hair wearing red reading glasses, next to her was a second, taller female with white hair in a bob, finally there was a taller male with blue hair and a sword shaped birthmark. "That's Levy," Lucy wrapped her arms around the female reading a book, "this is Lisanna," she pointed to the female with white hair, "and finally, that's Jellal." Jellal waved his hand in greeting. I waved back. "You're a Senior, right?"

"Uh, yeah. Yeah."

Lucy laughed. "Levy-chan and I are Sophomore's, since our grades are so high, we're allowed to take Senior classes. Lisanna and Jellal are Seniors, like you." She explained. After Lucy explained that to me, we all started talking. I learned that Levy and Jellal were siblings, though they weren't aware of it until a few years ago. I also learned the obvious, Jellal, Levy, and Lisanna dyed their hair. No one has naturally blue or white hair. As everyone talked, I looked around the room to see if I could find Natsu. He wasn't anywhere and I was sure I didn't miss him because you couldn't miss that pink hair.

My next class was Social Studies with Mrs. Strauss, a woman with dirty brown hair in a tight bun. Erza was in that class, so she told me that Mrs. Strauss was married to Lisanna's older Brother, Elfman, who was also the Physical Education teacher at the school. Natsu wasn't in that class either. After that class I had science with Levy and her Junior boyfriend Gajeel Redfox. I was intimidated by him, but once Levy told me about the time he cried over the Titanic for two hours, I calmed down around him.

A few classes passed and lunch finally came. When I was heading to the cafeteria with my bagged lunch, made by my Mother who was an amazing cook, someone grabbed my arm. It was Lucy. Standing beside her was a pale female with amber eyes and red hair. She held Lucy's free hand carefully, a smile on her face. I could only assume she was Lucy's girlfriend. "Come on!" Lucy cheered. She led me away from the cafeteria to the stairs leading to the roof.

On the roof was everyone I had met in my classes. Erza was talking with Jellal while they sat in the shade. Gajeel and Levy played video games with their backs against the fenced edges of the roof. Lisanna was sitting with her legs crossed. Natsu was sitting in front of her, smiling. Two lunches sat between them as they ate and signed with one another. Everyone greeted me with waves or calls. Lucy led me to where Lisanna and Natsu were sitting along with her girlfriend.

"Hey, Flare!" Natsu said verbally when he noticed Lucy's girlfriend. Flare waved her hand shyly. She sat close to Lucy, holding her arm with smile. Lucy didn't seem to mind, she even fed Flare some of her carrots as we talked. Natsu at one point moved away when everyone got into an argument on if Nutella was better than Peanut Butter. After throwing in my opinion, I walked over to Natsu. He was talking to himself under his breath.

Because I didn't want to scare Natsu, I slowly moved my hand in front of Natsu's face. He turned his entire body to face me. When he signed something, I couldn't respond. Natsu smiled before pulling out a large notebook. He flipped to a blank page in the notebook, handed me a pen, then waited patiently for me to write something. Quickly, I scribbled down, "What were you mumbling about?"

Natsu took the pen from my hand and wrote down his response. When he handed me the notebook back, I was shocked to see how amazing his handwriting was. Only a calligrapher could have matched the perfect handwriting staring at me on the paper. After I got over the niceness of the writing, I read what Natsu had wrote. "Just reciting Centuries by Fall Out Boy."

"How? Not to offend, but how can deaf people listen to music?"

"I don't listen to music. I read the lyrics like a poem. Pretty nerdy, uh?"

"No." It went back and forth like this. Natsu and I talked through paper while eating our lunch. Occasionally, we would get involved in the conversations between the others, but it mostly stayed between the two of us. By the time lunch ended, Natsu and I had filled up two pages, the front and the back of those pages. As I headed to my next class, I scribbled "Bye" on the corner of Natsu's notebook. He smiled at me before walking away.

This day was going better than I thought it would.
