"Envy, why quit it all?"

We were at an old cafe. A burger and fries stood in front of me, but I couldn't bare to think I was going to give up a burger.

"Ian, why not let me?"

"I couldn't live the rest of my life knowing that you would have done that" he said. "I drove past. You were standing..."

His voice trailed and he covered his face with his hands.

"Why not let me leave?"

"No" he said. "The hing you should be saying is thank you."

"Thank you, Ian, for letting me live another day."

We are in silence for the rest of the meal. After he paid he turned to me.

"I'm Ian. I'm twenty seven years old, an author, and I live with my girlfriend. I had a friend who almost did what your doing...and I let him."

"What?"

"Three years ago I saw him end his own life. I persuaded him not to. But I couldn't. So I told him to stay there while I went to the bathroom, because I really had to go. When I came back, he was gone."

"Oh-"

"I blame it on myself, and I will never let it happen again."

"Ian-"

"So, why, Envy? I told you why, now it's your turn."
