She heard a slow breath drawn in, then released, behind her right as Charlie walked over, placing a hand on Fay’s shoulder. “Fay, look-.”

“At what? Him? I don’t think so . . . You don’t even know, Charlie, you have no idea what he-.”

“Actually, I do.” Fay’s head snapped to the side to look at her oldest friend, eyes wavering as she examined Charlie’s face. She didn’t find even a trace of deception. The space of her spark in her chest quickened. Charlie knew. Charlie KNEW. Fay felt a terrible weight sink into her stomach, her throat closing tightly. Charlie couldn’t know, Charlie couldn’t possibly understand something so complex so easily when Fay tripped over the information every time it crossed her mind and-.

Fay shot a teary glare at Optimus, pressing her lips together tightly. She imagined all sorts of ways to hurt him, to make him pay for revealing her secret without her consent. Why couldn’t he be more like Charlie, who always respected her secrets without a question. Charlie never went blabbing or saying things she shouldn’t about Fay and, and . . . Fay hated him for that.

“He told me you cut your wrists . . . And that’s why you’re here . . .” Charlie’s eyes glanced around the room, her voice barely a whisper as she spoke. “But is there something else . . . ? We know this isn’t a normal institution for people with . . . problems like yours . . .” Her head tilted slightly. “What is this place, Fay? Where have you been sent?”

Fay groaned, crossing her arms and rolling her eyes before looking away, locking her eyes on the floor. “I wish I knew,” she admitted ruefully. “How did you even get here? I haven’t got a clue where this place is.” The climate suggested it was somewhere near her hometown, within a hundred miles, maybe two. “No one tells me anything here,” she added, a bitterness to her tone that suggested she was far from content with that information.

Charlie frowned, glancing back at Optimus, who shook his head gently in response. Fay was so busy having a staring contest with the floor tiles she didn’t even notice the interaction. She was so wrapped up in her own mind that everything else was just a faint buzz against her ear; irritating, but highly ignorable.

Charlie’s green eyes turned back to Fay, who was oblivious to everything outside her as her thoughts began to suck her away with so little effort it was terrifying. ‘FarLust, return to your chamber.’ ‘Yes, Sir.’

“Fay,” Charlotte said firmly, reaching for Farrah, grabbing her wrist gently. The one Fay had slit so many times she’d lost track; the one Fay had piled cuts on top of cuts on when she was starting to run out of room; the one Fay had attempted to annihilate her heritage with. She just wanted it to go away. Wanted it all to go away. But when Charlie grabbed her wrist, though it was unscarred at this point, it was a bit tender. And even if it wasn’t, Fay suspected she still would’ve followed that course of action; the brunette recoiled, hissing as she bared her teeth at Charlie, pupils contracting as she assessed the threat.

It was a primal, animalistic instinct. One her catalyst formation had caused. Part of her would always be that way. Optimus understood that. It was part of the reason she was so dangerous. He could nearly see cat-like ears pressing flat to Fay’s head as she bore what should have been dentas if she’d stayed in her true form. Optimus vented slowly. If the Decepticons were capable of creating sparks, though it was hardly secret, then they would likely be able to transfer Fay’s spark into a true Cybertronian form. Not a ‘half-breed’s’.

He didn’t know what to think about that. If Fay went back to the way she’d been created, then she would quite possibly be unstoppable. They didn’t know all of her abilities, but she was obviously dangerous. She was the sole survivor of the plethora of experimental soldiers; weapons. They were hardly even alive from the Decepticon view of things.
