Shit! Shit! Shit!
I cursed as I looked at my watch. It was my first day at work and I could not afford to be late! I tried to gain pace but my legs had started to give in. And I had to run all the way from the subway to work on my two hind legs! Well, not that hind, I am strong. But the thing is those feet rested on desperately high heels which made my legs hind! I hated heels. You may ask then why am I even wearing them? -It is the damn dress code! Who keeps heels as a dress code? I am pretty sure that I would be arranging a funeral for my feet by the end of the day!
As I ran, I could see the gates of the campus nearing. It was 8:24 am. I had only four minutes to cross the 450m of campus to the building and then go to the 23rd floor. No shit! I could do that! Mark the utter sarcasm.
My heels had started to kill me and I decided to remove them and run barefoot. It was the only way I could reach on time. I stopped near a lamp post and removed my stilettos, removed my admit card from my bag. I held one in each hand.
And I ran for my dear life errr.... dear job.
The Ignise
The logo screamed as I reached the gate. I quickly showed my allowance card to one of the officers there. They gave a grave nod and motioned me over to the cart, the ones you see on golf courses. I quickly sat inside, the driver revved the engine and we were off.
I gave the driver a huge smile as a thank you and rushed inside the building. There again I had to show my allowance card to a female. She took forever to read the card. As soon as I saw she was about to give it back, I hastily snatched it from her hand gave her a big smile before I ran into the elevator.
It was 8:29 am, as the metal doors of the elevator closed. Surprisingly there was only me in the elevator. I used the time to wear the stilettos back. I checked my appearance on the elevator wall, which was no better than a mirror. I was a mess. Hair from my ponytail was coming out.
My shirt had crumpled a bit. I redid the pony, and tried to uncrumple my shirt and skirt with my hands. With a smile on my face, I stared back at the reflection.
Who knew somebody like me could reach such heights!
Both physically and metaphorically speaking.
Plink!
I turned around as the doors to my dreams opened. A huge room stared back at me. There were many couches, a coffee table in between and beside them was a desk. Where a girl of about my age sat, she had her long blonde hair tied in a tight ponytail, not a single strand sticking out. She just had a mild red lipstick and absolutely no make-up. She looked very pretty. She was busy doing some paperwork when I approached her.
"Hey!" I said timidly. I was a wreck when came to talking to new people.
"I am Nancy Wo-"
"Oh! You arrived!" she smiled wildly and looked up at me. "Go to boss's office at once! He does not like late comers. And you are..." she glanced at her watch. "....already three minutes late and you need to run to his office now!" She started pushing me towards the hallway, before I could even say a word. I took her advice and practically ran towards the last door.
I took two deep breaths as I reached the door. The door had a black nameplate and the name of my boss was written in white colours.
Mr. Rehaan Hamilton
It read. The door was ajar. I pushed the door open. I stepped inside and saw my desk. With my nameplate on it.
Personal secretary
Ms. Nancy Woham
It read. I put my belongings on the desk and ran to the door behind it. I knocked on the door. I heard a faint 'come in' before I pushed open the door and stepped inside.
