Spirit stood on his hill, feeling the strong wind blow through his mane. He looked out across his land, revelling in its glory. Hoofbeats sounded behind him and he turned his head to see Rain, his friend and mate.
" Liber has a new foal...it's a filly, she looks strong. " Rain strutted up beside him, flicking away a few mosquitoes with her tail.
Spirit nodded " That's good, this spring will bring many new additions to our herd. " He nuzzled her and moved his head to sniff her stomach. " How's our addition?" He asked, pressing his forehead to her side.
Rain nuzzled him back, taking in a breath. " He should be arriving soon.." she mumbled, her eyes closed.
Spirit tilted his head slightly " How do you know it's a he?"
Rain raised an eyebrow, giving him the look that had made him fall for her in the first place...literally. " I just know...you'll see." She flicked her tail again when a panicked whinny could be heard from below. Spirit quickly scanned the area below him before his eyes settled in one of the mares, Mountain. He whipped around, racing down the hill and coming to a dead stop beside the distraught mare.
" What? What ha-" Spirit stopped when he saw what the small crowd had gathered around. A small foal, newborn, laying still in the grass. He blinked, not knowing what to do.
Mountain sniffed her foal, then prodded her with her muzzle. She turned her to head to Spirit, the whites of her eyes showing.
" He's not moving...he won't move! " She cried, looking at the other horses that had come to see what was wrong. " Someone help him!" She whinnied, looking helpless. Spirit opened his mouth to say something when a soothing voice sounded behind him.
" Mountain, I need you to step back..." Spirit knew that voice, one he had longed to hear for a long time. He turned his head to see his mother trotting forwards. Esperanza stood beside Mountain, waiting for the distraught mother to step back. Mountain lowered her head and stepped back, just enough to make room for their Lead Mare. Esperanza rested her forehead against the still foal's stomach. She sighed, long, heavy, and filled with sadness. " He's lost..." she whispered. Murmurs broke through the herd, everyone whispering quietly. Rain led a hesitant Mountain away, nuzzling the grieving mare. Spirit knew what he had to do, and it made his heart drop. He laid down on the grass beside the foal. Esperanza pushed the the young colt onto his back, making sure he wouldn't slip off. Spirit steadily stood up and, keeping his head low, walked away from his herd. He would need to take the foal somewhere hidden, where no one would scent him. His mother would gather the herd and they would share their grief together, the first stage of moving past his death. The weight on his back was almost too much to bear as a he walked away, he had never done this for a foal. His elders had been carried away on his back many times, but this was different. They had lived, they had felt the wind through their mane. They had ran over hills and through the lakes, but this foal had not even experience the sun hitting his eyes. Spirit let out a mournful nicker and headed into the sunset. This had not been the spring he was hoping for.
