Chapter One
My eyes flicked open as I began to feel cold. Instead of on my soft bed, I felt hard cement. Was this a trick of my sister's? I was only 11- and she was 15. I began to feel annoyed. I sat up and rubbed my eyes until my blurry vision fell away. The first thing I noticed was the ceiling fan. It was... on the ground? I glanced up and saw my bed, on the ceiling.
"Umm..." I wondered to myself. The first thing I thought of was that I was on the ceiling, looking down at my bed, which was on the floor. I shook my head. That couldn't be. My dad probably helped my older sister glue my bed to the ceiling. Then I noticed all of my other stuff was glued to the ceiling too. And what clued me in the most that I might just be on the ceiling was my glass of water.
It was still on my dresser, and still full of water. But the water wasn't pouring out, as the laws of gravity said so. Instead, it was just there. I stepped over my doorway and out into the hall. This was very cool, but VERY weird at the same time. I approached the staircase, and found only a ramp. Then I remembered I was on the ceiling. I looked up and found the stairs where the cement ramp should be.
As I walked down the ramp, I realized this might of happened to my family, too. I hurried back up the ramp and onto the ceiling, reached up for the doorknob and stepped over the top of the doorway. I looked up and saw my mom, dad, and their bed still attached to the ceiling- wait, floor. I creeped into my older sister Bella's room and there she was, still sleeping as if nothing had happened. Then her eyes slowly opened and she saw me. She rubbed her eyes twice and put her glasses on.
"Ahhhhhhh! What has happened to you Anne?" She shrieked
"Shhhhhh! Mom and Dad are still sleeping!" I whispered as loudly as I could.
She stared at me in awe. I grinned right back. It was cool to see someone on the floor when you are on the ceiling.
'It must be amazing to her.' I thought. I never really thought about it myself. How lucky I was to be having this experience. It never really sank in, but was now. I started happy-whisper-shrieking with her.
Chapter Two
We went downstairs and she handed me a bowl of cereal. I had to hold it upside down so that it wouldn't spill. It was hard. She handed me a glass of water and stood right under me. I purposely held it upright- or upside down for her- and all of it came spilling out onto her. I started laughing my head off, and she joined in. That's what I love about Bella. Out of all the pranks she pulls, she still doesn't get mad about anything.
"What is going on down here?" called the voice of my mother.
"Hide!" Bella whispered to me. "If mom sees you, she's gonna have a heart attack!"
I scurried away and heard my sister making excuses for me.
"Where's Anne?" Mom asked suspiciously.
"Oh, um... She just went to her friend's house and they invited her to a sleepover." Bella said unconvincingly.
"Ok then..." Mom said, walking away.
I returned, and went to get lunch. Bella handed me a sandwich. At least I could eat this upside down. All the crumbs fell on the ground. Bella, being nice, cleaned them up for me. She whispered in my ear:
"This is a secret between you and me, okay? Don't tell anyone."
"Okay." I whispered back. I smiled. Sometimes it was nice to keep a secret.
Chapter Three
It was a Monday. Back to school. I sighed, and then realized I would have to show Mom what had happened to me. The thought never struck me that when I went outside, I would float up into the sky, up, and up, and up, and up, until I was out of sight and lost forever.
"Anne!" A voice whispered urgently to me.
"Huh, what, who are you?" I grumbled, wanting to sink back into the covers that had been thumbtacked to the ceiling.
I rubbed my eyes and saw Bella looking up at me.
"I'm going to have to tie a rope to you and bring you to school like a balloon!" She snickered.
"What?" I almost yelled. "First you don't want to show Mom, and now you want to present me to the entire world?"
"Relax." Bella explained. "I have already told Mom about it and she said it was okay to bring you to school. Plus, it's not the entire world." She grinned snarkily.
"Oh alright." I said crossly.
In literally 0.4 seconds she had me tied to a rope and we left. I stepped out into nothingness. The sky felt like it was gently tugging me upward, urging me to untie the rope and float up into the vast blueness, and it will be there to welcome me. But I knew that wasn't the case.
"Are we there yet?" I asked Bella, annoyed.
"Almost." She sighed.
5 minutes passed.
"Are we there yet?"
"Almost."
Another 5 minutes.
"Are we there yet?"
"Almost."
This kept on going for another 10 minutes, until we finally got there.
I stepped over the school doorway and entered.
It was quiet. I had a hard time getting up over the school's ceiling. I got into my classroom and sat down on the ceiling. Immediately, all my classmates crowded around me.
Maria is the most talkative person I have ever met, I decided. She kept asking me questions.
"What is it like? How'd it happen? Sorry, I forgot your name, what is it?"
Yup. Even that last one.
I sighed. "Anne." I said, exasperated.
"Oh sorry." She didn't even care.
"Okay kids," boomed the loud voice of our teacher, Mr. Crowther. "Let's leave Anne alone and focus on the lesson."
Later that day I told Mr. Crowther that I couldn't go outside. He didn't ask why.
Chapter 4
The week passed.
"Somehow I survived," I said to Bella, "THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY!!!!"
Bella laughed. Then something amazing happened. For the first time in weeks I felt myself getting heavier, and heavier. Gradually I lifted up off the ceiling and started slowly floating down towards Bella.
"Bella! I'M FLYING!" I screamed.
"NO SILLY!" she screamed back. "YOU'RE COMING BACK DOWN!"
I felt so happy. I don't know why. Being up on the ceiling sometimes was a pain. Sometimes you couldn't even go somewhere, if the next step up to another part of the ceiling was too high! I was so glad I was floating back to the ground. Once I was actually on the ground, I thanked Bella a million times for helping me on my "journey." She said it was no problem, but I disagreed. It meant everything in the world to me. It's nice to be close with someone you love.
