The idea that there was a greater power out there was incredible. That is, until one revealed itself. Supers. You've read about them in books and seen them in movies. They are the heroes and villains, the vampires and werewolves. They were even the gods people worshiped. Supers are real, they always have been, and now they're ruling the world. You think humanity would remember when the world ended, or as the supers call it 'changed', but no one does. It happened so quickly, no one noticed until the supers started to 'change' everything. Everyone lost everything. We were kicked out of our homes, lost any land we owned, any cars we owned, even the pets we owned. The supers then left us into the most run-down houses they could find. The majority of the population had been left to live on the streets. The worst was how the Supers punished anyone who rebelled against them. Their death was a warning from the supers, "Follow us, or die". The houses were set up in ranks. The more you aid the supers, the higher rank you earned, the better house you owned. Food came with the houses as well as running water, sometimes it could even be heated, but no clothes were given away. That's where my story starts out. in a Rank Six house with heated water, and enough food to feed a family of five, more than enough to feed my family of four. My parents were part of the first rebels, who died before they could even riot. My father served in the military, missing the first nine years of my childhood. My mother worked as a baker, always home for supper, but a little picky on what I made. When I turned nine my father returned. Not long afterwards, my parents had another child. A little boy with sparkling baby blue eyes, and a head full of golden hair. He had been named Ryan. Two years later they had another baby girl with matching features. Her name was Anna. They were adorable compared to me with my muddy brown hair and grayish-blue eyes. Their final child, was a boy they adopted, who lost his parents the day after his fourteenth birthday. Tucker had dark brown hair that went to his ears, and a pair of brown eyes to match. He always loved to get on my nerves, and push my buttons, even after my parents died last year. I've been taking care of the four of us ever since, and today would not be any different.
As I stirred the chunks of meat in the small amount of olive oil we had, I heard the door open. With a skirt full of mud, Anna came barreling into the house.
"Hi Rose." Anna said as I walked over to her and bent down, to examine her skirt.
"Anna what have I told you about playing in the mud?" I asked as she tried to hide her muddy skirt from me. As I looked behind her I saw Ryan, and Tucker standing at the door, also covered in mud. Taking a second look at the two boys I noticed Tucker had a hole in his sleeve. Ryan was crying, as blood ran done his pants, which also had a large hole. "Ryan go sit on the toilet I'll be right there with the bandaids. Anna go change. Tucker stir the meat in the pan and take it off the stove in three minutes." I ordered while grabbing a washcloth and the box of bandaids. I walked over to the bathroom and soaked the washcloth in warm water. I squeezed out any of the excess water, and lais it on Ryan's bloody knee. His eyes were still full of tears, that Ryan tried to hold back. I gave him a small hug, avoiding his knee, and whispered to him.
"It's okay everything gonna be okay." As I sat back to take the washcloth off his knee, I saw Ryan lean forward. His arms spread wide, in antisip for a hug, and tears running down his face again. I leaned into him giving him another hug, and hummed a little tune to him until his sobs calmed down. I pulled back again and reached for the box of bandaids, setting them by my legs. I grabbed the now cool washcloth and removed it from Ryan's knee. His knee had a lot of little scratches, which I covered with little bandaids, and one larger cut. I grabbed a large bandaid and placed it over the bigger scratch, having it over lay some of the smaller bandaids. I looked up at Ryan who's face was starting to return to normal.
"Better?" I asked. Ryan nodded, and leaned in for another hug. I gave a final hug before ushering him into the kitchen. I grabbed the washcloth, squeezed out as much water as I could, and threw it in the dirty clothes bin. I put the bandaids back into a cabinet in the kitchen, before going over to the dining room. Anna was wearing a clean skirt, while laughing as Tucker made funny faces at her. Ryan sat beside her, laughing as hard. All three of them had a plate sitting in front of them, with a lone plate next to Tucker, and between them sat the pan of meat. I went back into the kitchen. Grabbing some cheese, chopped lettuce, chopped tomatoes, and tortillas. I set everything down on the table, and helped Anna and Ryan get their food. Once I sat down with my plate off food, and took a bite, I got a comment from Tucker.
