Tribulations are not contests. In a contest, there are rules of fair play, there's a clear system of judging in place, and, at the end, someone generally wins a prize. Contests hold the promise of a happy end.
Tribulations are darker.
Tribulations don't have rules or organized judging, they last for an indeterminate period of time, and even when they end, there's no guarantee anyone feels better.
But they might make one stronger.
