She lived in a crime-infested world. She despised the nature of it, but she couldn't say she was untouched by the darkness. After all, corrupted blood ran through her vein and tainted her just like how it had tainted others.
In a world where murder was acceptable, drug-dealing and robbery were the norms, and human trafficking was a daily occurrence, there was no place for kindness or sympathy. This was a world where the strongest survived and the weakest sacrificed and eaten. It was a dog eat dog world, and she was prideful to say that she was at the top of the pack.
Her name was Hironaka Sana and she worked as an assassin for anyone willing to pay her. Her current assignment tasked her with the duty to kill a wealthy mafia boss and loot his safe for an invaluable bronze mirror. The mirror, according to the information given to her by her boss, was an ancient, Egyptian artifact. It once belonged to a concubine of the king and was worth quite a fortune. In an auction, it could sell for more than millions of dollars.
"Or more, if someone is willing to hire an assassin for it," Sana murmured to herself, peering through the eyepiece of her sniper rifle. Her hiding spot in a room facing her target's mansion provided her the perfect place to observe her prey without others seeing her. The windows to the room repelled the light of the setting sun and when the light hits the windows at the right angle, it transformed the transparent glass into a reflective surface, preventing any prying eyes from seeing her behind the windows.
Her plan was simple: assassinate her target, then using the chaos that usually follow after an assassination, sneak into the treasury and snatch the mirror. Sana smirked and tugged her fedora down to shadow her face. She had already taken care of the security cameras by installing a fake footage into each of them. Killing the target and stealing his mirror would be easy.
And so, Sana unlocked the safety and pulled the trigger. The bullet was silent as it shot out of the rifle, sliced through the crisp, autumn air, and reached its mark. The screams from the attendants that followed after their boss' head erupted in a scatter of blood and tissues was not, however.
The grin on the assassin's lips widened as she gave a fleeting glance at the upheaval she caused before she slung her weapon over her shoulders and made her way towards where the safe was located. A blueprint of the entire mansion hung between her fingers, and she gave the sheet one last look before setting it on fire with a lighter. Having already memorized the layout of the place, she had no need for it anymore.
Now, all she needed to do was to steal the treasure.
oOo
The west wing of the mansion was void of any signs of human presence, just as she had expected. Everyone had either scattered off or rushed to the scene of the murder. There was no one around to guard the safe.
Sana chuckled lightly to herself as she stopped in front of a single, large door. The door was made of steel, making it sturdier and harder to break. Instead of a knob, there was a line of buttons adorning the metal. Each button had a single number printed on them. Sana rubbed her chin contemplatively before pressing the fifth button twice, then the first and ninth one once.
Metal screeched against metal as the door slid open to reveal pedestals upon pedestals of valuable artifacts inside. There were ruby-encrusted goblets, bronze coins with gold trimmings, and knives made of polished silver and lined with jewels.
The dark haired girl hummed thoughtfully as she passed by the rows of items, occasionally pausing and picking up a piece before slipping it into her bag. Those she would keep for herself. She could get a good price for each and every object in this room. There was no way she would pass up this chance.
The heels of her boots clicked on the floor as she strolled towards the back of the room where an innocent-looking, bronze mirror sat idly upon a pedestal. Lights shone upon the glass, making it shine with a golden aura. Sana deftly plucked the item up, twisting her hand to examine the mirror.
The mirror was copper in color and appeared to be lacquered to prevent it from rusting. Engravings of Egyptian gods can be seen on the black material on the back of the glass, with gold linings on the figures of the gods and goddesses. Sana gave a hum of appreciation at the skillful work and turned the mirror to its front to make sure there were no scratches on the glass.
And then she froze.
Instead of her appearance gazing back at her, she was met with a pair of startled, blue eyes. Her own eyes widened in shock and her lips opened to give a shout of surprise. However, no sound came out when she felt a tugging sensation and all her energy seemed to dissipate from her body. Her eyes slipped shut and she crumpled on the ground, unconscious.
