I stood on the concrete in front of my house, holding my breath, anxiously awaiting his arrival. I really had no clue where we were going. Wandering is something we've been doing for awhile now. Simply driving, without a set destination, till we reached something that seemed worth it.
The rules were simple:
•do not have a set destination in mind
•can't wander for more than 24 hours
•always leave something behind
•log the wander in the notebook
•stay in Wisconsin
Finally his car (named barbara) pulled up as his window rolled down to flash me a warm smile. The door swung open and I climbed into the passenger seat.
His hand slowly reached across the center console and slid into my fragile palms. His fingers laced with my own as we drove with no set goal.
We started wandering after a single night where we set out on the open road. We wanted to be anywhere but here. So we drove, drove until there was no where else to go. We finally found a lake where we just sat there watching the night sky. Trying to tell the difference between shooting stars and satellites.
"You're thinking about something, what?"
"this. us. the open road."
"What about us?"
"What we're doing, why your hand is laced with mine when you have a beautiful girlfriend. Why you spend your time with me and cancel on her to do so. Why she gets to love you and I don't.."
His face falls. I turn away almost instantly because I can't bear to look at him.
"You're right."
I don't answer, just weakly croak out the word drive
And that's what we do. We drive away from the mess we've made. All our troubles. We started the wanderings for tbis reason. That's why we continue, this is the only way we know to cope.
I strained my eyes to gaze out my window and the dark sky above that was peppered with stars. This sight takes me back to the reason we started all of this.. the night sky, open road.
Just me and him against the world.
"I don't love her."
My eyebrows furrow in confusion as I pull away from the window to look at him.
"I never have, I never will."
My confusion grows with every statement he makes.
He hesitates before speaking again.
"Because I love you"
At this point he is pulled over on the side of the highway that has become my second home. I look for honesty in his light blue eyes. They have become glazed over by tears. The salty liquid drips down his cheeks.
He's not kidding.
My hand gently lays on his cheek and my thumb brushes away the tear. His eyes flicker down to my lips and mine soon repeat the action. His soft lips are against mine, moving together as if they are one.
We pull away grasping for a breath. His forehead pressed against mine and his finger threaded though my hair. And in the deafening silence I whisper.
"I love you too."
I now know where we where driving all along. Home.
Home is wherever I'm with him.
He guides the car out onto the open road.
"Let's go wander.."
