when i was young,
my mom used to always tell me
don't fall in love.
you're too young.
i would always nod my head
and tell her
i'm not like that.
when i was young,
my dad used to always tell me
don't mess around with boys.
they're nothing but trouble.
i would always nod my head
and tell him
i know, dad.
when we were young,
you asked me if i loved you.
i would always say
goodnight.
but while the emptiness i fed you
lured you to sleep,
i would lie awake writing down everything i could never ever say.
