Sometimes the person you'd take the bullet for is the one holding the gun -Tupac

Annabeth shut her eyes as sunlight seeped through the window, illuminating the apartment, colours dancing along the walls. She leaned her head against the cool brick wall, her legs crossed beneath her, her lyric book lay open on a blank page next to her.

Despite the warmth that the sun's rays emitted and her grey woollen sweater, Annabeth shivered. She opened her eyes and stared at the door, her mind a million miles away. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't compose a single song. To put it simply she had a serious case of writer's block and it didn't seem to want to leave.

Annabeth glanced over at her guitar that lay next to her lyric book, abandoned. She gingerly picked it and tested strumming a few chords on it. Nothing. She groaned in frustration. Where has all her inspiration gone?

She knew the answer before the question had entirely formed. With him.

She gripped the guitar, her knuckles turning a deathly shade of white. Luke Castellan. The bastard who broke her heart and left her in this pathetic state. He wasn't content with just damaging her heart, but he also had to take one of her biggest passions: her music.

But she knew it was partially her fault. She'd let him in, she'd trusted him and his sugar coated words. His cheesy but endearing gestures, but she should have seen. It had happened so slowly that not even she had noticed.

Every nerve of her body had told her not to trust him, her brain telling her he was trouble, but her heart had practically been beating out of her chest.

Slowly, but surely he started to pull away. He would arrive late, or not even go at all to their  planned dates. He became much more conscious of his body image and he'd sometimes just start random arguments for no apparent reason.

When she'd caught them two together she'd felt her world come crashing down. It had been their two year anniversary and Luke had forgotten to show up once again and so she'd driven over to his apartment and found him there. But he hadn't been alone.

One of the only reasons she had writer's block, was because she refused to be one of those girls who tried to grab attention or to start unnecessary drama over someone who clearly wasn't worth very much, by writing those songs about how broken hearted she was and how much she needed him back.

That just wasn't her, she still her pride and her career and that's what she'd dedicate time to now. She wasn't going to get into another relationship. Not after Luke.

At least for now she would focus on her career and making sure the band didn't sink just because she was. They were her family and after everything they had done for her she would not let them down like this. She wasn't ready to commit to anyone, to allow herself to  become that emotionally vulnerable again.

The band was everything she had. That and Max, her gorgeous huskie, who was probably sleeping on her bed at the moment. She smiled at the thought and for a brief  moment she felt her mood lift. Thinking about Max always managed to put a smile on her face. She'd found him one night, walking home in the pouring rain as there seemed to be no available cabs.

She had just taken a wrong turn down a alleyway, and had been about to turn back when she'd heard a tiny whimper and there the in dumpster was Max. A tiny, half starved, shivering just weeks old puppy.

She had wrapped him up in her already soaking coat and had walked the last few blocks, attempting to warm him with her own body heat. In a few weeks she had nursed him back to health and at the same time had found herself a loyal companion, who she ended up falling in love with.

Her smile returned as she heard the light tread of paws against wood as Max bounded down the winding flight of stairs and threw himself at her. He licked her face eagerly, managing to extract a small burst of laughter from Annabeth's lips. She felt herself relax and fiercely hugged Max. She leaned her head against his silky fur and had resolved what she was going to do, at least for now.

She wasn't going to let anyone hurt her again, not the way Luke had. Never again. This she was certain of.

Or was she?
