When the paper came I got chills. The Nazi forces were driving forward. They had no remorse for anyone or anything. Most people in my town remained unaware of what was happening when one of their neighbors disappeared. I for one wouldn't let it stand.
"Good news or bad news?" Lena asked in a shaky tone.
I only just shook my head.
"We should just flee before they arrive." Oliver commented as he crossed his arms
"And risk getting caught? We have to stay here." Lena responded in a calm manner.
My hands shake ever so slightly as I set the paper down. How could the world turn to hell so quickly?
"Don't worry about it. They can't find you here." I commented with a soft smile.
Though I'm not Jewish, I still cared for my friends. Life was rough before I met them. They learned to accept me and for that I was thankful. I sat down with my group at our small dinner table as we all ate and cracked jokes. We wouldn't allow bad times to get to us. I flinch slightly as there is a knock at my door. I set my bread down and went to answer the harsh knock.
"Can I help you?"
The boy wasn't much younger than I was. I soon realize under all the dirt and sweat that it was Gabe, a boy who lived down the street. He seemed out of breath and panicked.
"Hide them. Now." He pointed to Lena and Oliver.
I looked at him as my small smile faded into a frown. I began to shake again as I offered him to come in. The both of us head to the table.
"They've already taken Joseph and Eliza, can't be long until they reach you two." He looked at Oliver and Lena.
"Follow me." My tone was extremely serious.
I lead my best friends to the loose floor board near the edge of the room. I hand them some snacks before the vanish into the darkness in the ground. They both go silent as Gabe and I waited upstairs. We remain as calm as possible until the silence of the room was filled with three hollow knocks. The two of us make eye contact before staring at the door. The knocking repeated, but this time harsher. Gabe goes and answered the door in a nice manner, but he would never expect the following events to unfold.
