In the beginning, the four Creators made Velmouth. It would be the home of their creations, Hemlyn. They needed these beings to protect the Requiel, the energy plane. There are two types of energy in the Requiel, faesure and nyric. Faesure energy is pure light, while nyric energy is pure darkness. These creatures would not be able to use both of the opposing energies. Loiven made one race that had faesure flowing through their souls. These were the angels. He gave them white wings and fair hair. Loiven made the angels graceful and humble. Then Gruhet made demons whose souls held nyric. He made these people strong and fast with pointed ears and red hair. The two Creators made the first of these races immortal, but their descendants would have a significantly shorter lifespan. However, none of them could die from any mortal means.
Marath made immortal animals to be companions to the Hemlyn. She made a multitude of legendary animals. There were dragons, unicorns, phoenixes, pegasi, hippogriffs, griffins, and basilisks. The Hemlyn and their beautiful companions lived in unity. For a while, there was peace on Velmouth, but the demons started to cause problems. Tensions rose between the Hemlyn. After avoiding conflict for quite a while, the peace was shattered when the leader of the demons planned an attack on the angels. The demons launched this attack, but the angels fearlessly fought back.
Both sides were at a stand still for neither side could beat the other. In one last effort to end the dreadful war, the angels snuck into the demon base and took the demon leader's mate. The leader was furious. He lashed out, and nearly destroyed his army in the process of fighting his way to her. The angels slowly manipulated her into siding with them. The woman helped them create the first Faevul blade. It was made of pure faesure, and it destroyed any nyric that it touched. She fought alongside the angels to end the war. The demon leader's heart was crushed by the sight of her fighting alongside his enemy. He immediately gave up, and the demons were easily defeated without their leader giving orders.
The Creators were grateful that the war had ended, but one of them, Kilti, knew that this wouldn't be over yet. While Kilti had not created any beings, she was tasked with watching over all of the creatures. She carefully watched the demon leader because she knew that he would strike back at the angels. He had two of his trusted minions, the Twins, take one of the angels as retribution for the taking his beloved. The Twins tortured this angel mercilessly, and she became a twisted wretch. She joined the demons. Her soul became gnarled, and she longed for destruction. The leader commanded his people to come up with a way to kill the angels, to destroy them.
Over time, a small group of demons had developed a type of blade made of pure nyric, the Nyresi blade. The leader gradually formed a plan to decimate the angels. Kilti watched all of this, but she was not allowed to intervene with the affairs of Velmouth. She was deep in the recesses of the Requiel, so she could not have reached the angels in time anyways. Kilti wracked her brain for a solution, and she finally thought of a way to put an end to all of this. She would make a people that could stop the tide of war.
They had no powers, but they were strong willed. They were completely mortal, but they reproduced quickly. They were plain, but they were unique. She created the humans. Kilti made the humans. She tasked them with keeping the two peoples at bay. Marath saw what Kilti was doing and offered another feature that would help these people. Marath would place all of her animals into a small percent of the humans in return for Kilti helping her create new animals for Velmouth. These humans were called old souls. They were the elders of the human society. They would know how to stop the war. Kilti gave them Faevul and Nyresi swords for their own protection. She then placed them in the land between the two groups of Hemlyn.
The humans quickly stopped the demons from attacking with the help of the angels. The demons surrendered, and an agreement was signed. Velmouth knew peace yet again. Hemlyns and humans lived together. There were occasional skirmishes, but they were resolved quickly. Soon, there were children that were the products of crossbreeding. Cambions were the children of humans and demons, and nephilims were the children of angels and humans. These children had a variety of talents. The blood of humans mixed with the powers of the Hemlyns to create powerful beings. These new peoples were categorized as Hemlyn for their powers. The line of old souls was quickly lost in the frenzy of the world.
The cambions were able to shift into animals and use nyric at will like their demon progenitor. They were fast and strong. They also had hair that matched the color of their eyes. Nephilims had wings, but they were never entirely white. They had healing abilities and could use faesure. They could also control the mind to reshape the person's perceived reality, but many of the nephilims don't use this power on a whim.
While these descendants had great powers, many of them were born with defects. Many children were born with odd deformities because the DNA of Hemlyns and humans wouldn't always combine perfectly. There were nephilim that were born blind. Some of them would be born with only one wing. Cambions would come out as half animals. While others just scathed by with only one pointed ear and one rounded ear. Most parents would either kill or abandon their child. The cambions and nephilims were outcasts in the world.
However, the old souls were not lost. Sporadically, a nephilim, cambion, or human would show signs of being an old soul. They would come when Velmouth needed saving. Their powers would be far greater than others of their kind. If they were human, then they would be wise and controlled. No matter what race an old soul was, they would be able to unite the people of Velmouth.
Many of the people think that the Creators have abandoned them due to their disappointment in the meager advancement of Velmouth. All the Creators can do is gently manipulate the chain of events, so the people of Velmouth must save the land themselves. Many years have passed since the beginning of Velmouth. Nations have come and gone. The demons have tried attacking the humans and angels over years. Humans have grown resentful of the Hemlyn due to their powers. The land is on the brink of war, and a small organization is working to stop it.
