"Granddad," I laughed, slightly exasperated at the same conversation that I could recite word for word. "How many times must you ask me in a day before you understand that I'm single simply because I am not interested in anyone because I choose to be."

After an incident a couple of years ago, I decided to focus on me. A boyfriend was no longer on my list of things to attain in life. I matured quickly, and even though I'm now accepting what happened, and am moving on, I find it hard to have fun, let myself go. Fun is distractions. Fun means making not-at-all thought-out decisions. I'll always have trouble with thinking before I act, but at least now I'm conscious of it.

"Nonsense Petal, you must find someone attractive." Granddad tsked, waving his hand in the air.

"I find plenty of people attractive, I'm just not attracted to any of them. Besides, I have so many things going on in my life, and I don't need a partner to make me happy. I'm content living my life without someone by my side. I get more than enough loving from my family." I reasoned, trying to make him understand for the hundredth time. And, for the hundredth time, he ignored me.

"Bah, you and your books just think you haven't found the right one. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun while you wait for him!" He exclaimed, earning laughs all around the table. I shook my head in response. Fun is distractions. But, there is no arguing with Granddad on this subject, there is only plenty of sighing on my side, and him exciting himself over the thought of me finally settling down, or 'having fun', as he puts it. It's perfectly acceptable for a young adult to not be interested in hooking up with random people. Surely. Sometimes I worry my granddad was a man-whore in his prime...

"So, Thea, how's your new school?" I asked my step-sister, to change the subject.

"You ever notice how you always turn to me to change the subject?"

"That's because I could always trust you to never point it out. Until now, that is."

"School is good, I'm nervous about my trip though..."

"Why? It should be super exciting to go to another state to represent your school!"

"...You speak as if a school is a place to enjoy myself at?" As Thea questioned my sanity, there was a loud pounding on the front door, that we all heard from our place in the backyard. Bethany, my step-mum, stood to answer the door.

"I got it." I jumped up, smiling at her and left to answer the front door. Bethany smiled in return and sat back down to join in the conversation with the group. Such a sweet lady. Outrageous Mad-Hatter-orange hair, but sweet.

The floorboards creaked under the weight of my feet as I walked the last steps to the door. The harsh knocking continued. I blew out a quick breath before I unlocked the bolts and looked through the fly screen. Standing infront of me is... an angel. A tall, lean man with chiselled features. Piercing eyes the colour of a dark, golden brown. And clear, tan skin.
