This short paragraph is taken "from typical New York State Regents examinations in English Four Years that are given to candidates for the high-school diploma." [Reference "Faster Reading Self-Taught" by Harry Shefter, circa 1966] 

Could you imagine this being being taught in today's schools?  People would argue that we are more advanced today, more intelligent, and that our educational system has progressed. I think in certain respects we have, but looking at the overall picture it just feels, at least to me, that our society lacks the intellectual wherewithal of yesteryear.
