He wheezed, “But Rain and Lynette…”
“Will be fine.” She finished for him. “They will just need a lot of sleep.”
Rain coughed into his hand, and made sure that his hand wiped his face when he moved it and then took special care to clench his hand into a fist. He even went as to far to hid his hand behind his back, so that Maria couldn’t see. I took my eyes away from Keegan for a second because I was so curious what he was obviously hiding. He had loosened his grip slightly behind his back. I could see that he had blood on his hands. My eyes widened and I looked at Rain. He gave me this glare that said, “If-you-say-anything-then-I-will-kill-you.”
I felt as if I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer. I was afraid though. What if I fell asleep and Maria didn’t have enough energy to save him? I know she could use her own energy but it seemed to work better if she didn’t. Rain was at least determined for her not to. My eyes fluttered one more time and I whispered to Keegan, Rain, and Maria all for different reasons but they were the same words, “I’m sorry.” Then, I passed out.
I woke up in a bed in the sick bay. Keegan and Rain were across the room from me. Maria sat in between their beds, facing Rain. Darian had a chair by my bed, leaning against the wall. I was amazed that the chair hadn’t fallen over yet since he was asleep. I looked at Maria. “Really? You couldn’t have done something about him?”
“He won’t listen to me.” She replied after a moment of shock that I was speaking.
I sighed. “Is Keegan okay?”
“We finally got all of the poison out of him. I slept for a good twenty-four hours afterward. Shortly after you collapsed, so did Rain. The idiot was coughing blood every few seconds. I shook him off and he blacked out. Keegan has been awake on and off and Rain hasn’t yet.”
Right then he spoke, “Has too.”
“Speak of the devil.” Maria commented. Both of them were silent for a moment before Maria went off on him, “Why would you do that Rain?! Even after I told you not to because you had the possibility of dying!! I would have been just fine without your help. I only had to heal him for another two hours after Lynette collapsed!”
“And then you slept for twenty-four! What would have happened if you had to have done that all by yourself?! Don’t think I don’t know that your power either hurts the one you’re taking energy from or yourself! People with your power have died because of it!”
“So you should die for me!?” He didn’t answer. “You’re completely reckless! What would I do without you? And, knowing that you did it so that I wouldn’t die makes it worse!” It was the only time I had seen Maria truly angry. She stormed out of the room. The door slammed behind her.
Rain looked right at me. “Thank you.”
“Why are you thanking me?”
“You stopped Maria from using her own energy while I was unable to. I’ve been making her use my energy for a few years now. It’s slowly saving her life. Thank you for not letting my hard work go to waste.”
“You’re welcome Rain.”
Darian’s chair fell forward and he jerked awake. He blinked a couple times and gave a big smile. It didn’t go away as he said, “You’re awake.”
“Good observation.” Rain mocked.
“Shut up Rain.”
Rain commented before I could even say a word, “Dude, save yourself some heartbreak and give up. She doesn’t like you like that. You need to find someone who will.” The smile on Darian’s face faded.
