The year is 2067 and the world is drowning. Streams have turned into rivers and continents are being swallowed by oceans. Global warming has been a problem on Earth for the past 50 years, but most people didn't pay any attention to the fact that the world was hurting. Ice caps were melting, sea levels were rising, drinking water became scarce and diseases started spreading which led to whole towns disappearing. Many families have been torn apart by natural disasters. The government has been controlling everything a family is allowed to have. Bottled water was rationed out to stores and it was a first come first serve game. Our president seemed like he has something to hide and the government is sure that the global warming will fix itself. Most people buy into that idea, but I know better. Only we can stop our planet from melting.
It was another day full of downpours and constant weather warnings and threats of a Category Six Hurricane that was coming fast. Constant rising rivers pose a huge threat to most towns like ours. My family took cover in our basement with the windows and doors boarded up. My mom, dad, little sister Zoey and I were hoping to make it through another storm together. My little sister, Zoey, started crying because she had left the one thing that she loves the most behind on the bed in her room. I ran upstairs to get the stuffed koala out of her room, but once I grabbed the animal the roof started to creak. Out of fear I started to run towards the basement door. I was a few steps away from being with my family when the roof caved in.
I woke up after what felt like minutes, I'm surrounded by wood and I had the stuffed koala bear clenched in my fists. I tried to sit up but I feel a sharp pain go up my leg from my ankle. I look down and saw wood piled on top of my right foot. I looked around for other people or my family, but no one was in sight. I called out for my mom and dad but there was no one around to hear me calling. The realization that my family wasn't here hit me and I knew that I had to get up to find my family. I push the wood off of my foot only to notice that a nail is stuck in my ankle. I grimace in pain, clench my teeth and pulled the nail out. Excruciating pain went through my leg and tears fall from my eyes for the first time in a long time. I try to stand but my right ankle couldn't support me. In that moment I knew that I would not be able to walk, but I was bound and determined to find my family and get help. I focus on what I need to do and limped out of the rubble that used to be my home. Once I looked up everything I knew was destroyed, all the house that once held families were no longer standing. I call out for help, but there is no answer. I struggle to walk up a road that once had children running and playing but when I look around I find no one. Then I realize that I am all alone and that there was no one there to help me. The feeling of defeat takes over my mind and I wonder what happened to my family. I make my way to the place where my house used to be and noticed an open spot in the rubble. After pushing my way to an open space in the rubble I notice that it used to be the doorway to the basement stairs. I called out for my mom and dad, but there was no answer.
They left me, did they even think about me? Did they look for me? These are questions I don't have the answers to, but hopefully they will come soon enough. With little hope I search the nearby debris and found nothing to my advantage yet. I just wonder where everyone went. Is there a refuge further inland? With determination to find my family I continue down the street in search of things that could be beneficial to me. I have had very little luck but I came across some cloth that I can wrap my ankle in to cover the wound temporarily. Wrapping my ankle was a very painful process, but I managed to do so. Finding drinking water, a source of heat, a way to cook food, and a process to purify the salt water so it is suitable for drinking are some of my main concerns. I would use wood from the debris but everything is still soaked from the storm that took my family from me, so I'll have to resort to other options. If I could find some gasoline maybe I could start a fire, but I would need something to strike a spark so I could get a small flame. So I limp my way to the rubble of a nearby garage in search of anything flammable. I glance around at what's left standing and see something red under a pile of metal and wood. I work my way through the rubble and dig the red container out. It's a red gas can that felt pretty light. I didn't know if there was anything left in it, so I shake it and feel there is a very little amount of gas left in it. I walk around for a while looking for something to light a fire with. I need matches or flint and steel, but it was very unlikely that I would be able to find anything like that. All of the sudden I remember that my family kept a first aid kit in the kitchen. I limp back to where my home used to stand as fast as my injured ankle would let me go. It took me awhile to find what I was looking for, but found the red and white first aid kit.
I walk into the woods that surrounded my neighborhood, hoping that the trees would offer some kind of shelter from the rain that was sure to come. I open the first aid kit and found some bandages for my ankle, but they are wet. I rummage through everything else that's in the kit and found a few matches, just like the bandages they are soaked and useless to me. I was starting to panic, without any source of heat I knew that I was going to freeze tonight. Maybe the matches will be able to light the gasoline I found. With a small amount of hope I search for wood that isn't completely soaked. On my walk looking for dry kindling I saw a faint light in the distance. I couldn't tell how far away it is, but it won't hurt to go check it out. It could be the town close to my neighborhood, but it's probably destroyed just as bad. Before I walk too far I decided to go back and gather everything I had found. With my small amount of possessions I make my way towards the small light
