When love separates you from the truth, what do you have left?

This is the question I constantly ask myself, but an answer has yet to appear.  I walked through school with a smile forcibly placed on my lips while my friend, Jenna, goes on about her weekend.

“Hey are you even listening?” Jenna questioned

Da, kanyesha.”

“Ariella Bytchkov, now I know your mind is somewhere else!” Jenna yelled

Realizing that I just spoke Russian to her I apologized with a ‘please forgive me’ look on my face.

“I’m sorry; I meant ‘yes, of course’,” translating my Russian to English

“Yeah well obviously not,” she chuckled, “you’re my best friend and I love you, but lately you have been totally out of it. You’re always careful to not to speak Russian.”

“I know, but it’s not like I don’t put Russian words into my everyday English” I explained.

“I know you do, but you always use simple words like yes, no, sorry, and thank you. Not to go full on Russian on me.”

“Sorry” I said in a dry tone

“Don’t be,” she sighed, “come on or we’ll be late for ancient history.”

As we started walking my mind drifted back, back to the night he left and entrusted his secret with me. We hustled into the class room just before the tardy bell rang and took our seats.

“Okay class settle down, settle down,” Mr. Harris ordered, “now open your text books to chapter twelve today should be an interesting lesson for all of you.”

This class has always interested me, but now it’s just a reminder of the lie I must tell every day. It’s the only way I can protect him, but how long can I continue living like this the anxiety of seeing him of wrapping myself in his arms as he kisses the top of my head made my heart hurt.

“I’m sure we all have heard of the myths about vampires, werewolves, and witches, but there’s a myth so old that hardly anyone speaks of it anymore. It’s the myth of the Zemis or in English the serpents, these where the most feared creatures in Russia; they looked human, felt human, but the power that ran through their veins is what made them monsters. They killed with no remorse only satisfaction” Mr. Harris finished on that note giving the class time to soak in what he just said.

Hearing the story froze me to my desk, I couldn’t move the only thing that was racing through my mind was Jessie. Could Mr. Harris know what he was or was this just a coincidence? Can I keep his secret from Mr. Harris? I didn’t know and I sure as hell didn’t want to find out, the less I get involved the safer it is for the both of us.

“Ariella have you heard of this myth, coming from a Russian background I assume your parents have shared this story with you?” Mr. Harris asked in front of the entire class.

“uhh yes, yes my grandmother use to tell me it when I was younger” I managed to get out without slurring my words.

“Marvelous,” he said,” okay for the rest of the period I want you to partner up and finish reading this chapter and answer questions 1-4 on your worksheets, come on get started!”

I gathered my things and headed towards Jenna’s desk, I was not too excited about this assignment it hurt thinking about him knowing he isn’t here with me right this second. It kills.

“Pretty interesting tail huh?” Jenna asked

“Yeah I guess, I mean if you’re like into that kind of stuff.” I said trying not to sound too interested on the topic.

As we finished up our questions I started to put my belonging into my bag and watch the clock slowly tick away. It felt like this day would never end! It has only been three months since Jessie left and yet it feels like it has been an eternity. Just about a year ago I lived a normal life it was me and my grandmother A.K.A my Nana. But one day this strange family moved into town, we live in a small town known as Locks; so when someone new arrives it’s no secret. When my Nana found out that these people were Russian too, she just had to meet them and that’s when I met Jessie Ryzhkov and from there my life made a total 360 turn.

As soon as I heard the sound of the bell indicating that class was out and lunch had started, I couldn’t get out of that class fast enough.

Jenna and I walked through the halls of the school trying to get to the cafeteria before all the food was gone. Before I even new it Jenna was on the floor, looking up at the most spoiled and bitchiest girl that roamed this earth, Taylor Figgin, she has always caused us problems ever sense elementary school.

“What’s your problem?” I asked with a very threatening tone

“My problem is that I have girls like you roaming the halls of my school!” Taylor said like she was the queen of the world.

“You’re school? Last time I checked the principals name didn’t end with Figgin, so this isn’t you’re school or you’re hall!”

“Watch Bytchkov o---“

“Or what you’ll knock me to the ground like some little girl?” I said interrupting her threat.

“You may want to watch what you say, I mean after all you don’t have you’re precious boyfriend around to protect you. What, did he finally realize he can do way better then you?” she said with a grin from ear to ear.

“Now you better watch what you say,” I threatened, “and if I ever hear you even talk about Jessie I will personally rip your tongue out and shove it down your throat!”

She didn’t say anything at first we just stood there staring at each until the other gave up. But I stood my ground it was Taylor who broke of the stare saying that this isn’t worth her time and walked away with her head held high.

“Wow, I can’t believe she go so low to even bring up jess-“

Nyet, please don’t bring him up, Puzhalsta.”

“Yeah of course sorry I wasn’t thinking.” she said apologetically

“Thank you.”

To lighten the mood I looked at her and smiled she of course returned the smile, but it isn’t real none of this is real. I can’t even talk to my own best friend about what’s going on and how I feel. I promised jess I would keep his a secret
