what is the upside down?!

in season one, the upside down is described as "the vale of shadows"

"The Vale of Shadows is a dimension that is a dark reflection, or echo, of our world. It is a place of decay and death, a plane out of phase, a [place] with monsters. It is right next to you and you don't even see it."

The upside down obviously isn't the vale of shadows but it's pretty similar.

others say that when eleven created a rip in space time continuum she time traveled. TO THE FUTURE!!!! So the upside down is Hawkins in the future!!!! 

I've heard people say that the town is like that because of a missile.

It has been attacked (by the gorgons)

but, i have come up with my own theory...

i think that Hawkins is in that condition because of the Theselhydra (and the gorgons) 

also if my theory is correct that the monster in season 2 is a Thesalgorgon, then the town has been attacked by the Theselgorgon and it's minions (the Demigorgons) 

just a theory...
