Knock Around

George was winding up to toss a pebble at Matty's window, but froze at the sound of the side gate unlatching. He arched an eyebrow in amusement as Matty emerged from behind it, cursing under his breath as he tried to unstick his pant leg from his bicycle spokes.

He blinked happily at the sight of George, "I was just about to head to yours!"

George opted to fling the pebble at Matty's chest and without a word jumped on his bike, smiling into the breeze as he coasted off in an unspoken challenge to race down to the lake.

They had settled into a comfortable routine of sneaking out when they couldn't manage to meet up during the day. Together they chased every moment those endless summer days had to offer. The two of them always ended up at the lake, discussing their favorite new CDs, the pretty girls at school, the blank skin they wished they could fill with tattoos (if only they were old enough), laughing until they could hardly breathe as the light slowly sunk away behind the hills.

If he was being honest with himself, George was content to just sit quietly in Matty's company and let his mind drift. Matty could never manage to keep quiet for long, filling the silence with wistful sentiments of the two of them getting out and finding something better than their drab town. The fact that Matty always included both of them in his future musings, however fleetingly, had George biting the inside of his cheek to keep a wide grin from emerging. 

The night grew darker as Matty chattered on, and he would pause momentarily to take a deep drag from his cigarette. The ember on the end illuminated his eyes for a brief second and George often stared, longing to freeze time before the smoke could curl in front of them.
