Was it just me or did everyone's face just fall? "I hate it but at least you're happy I guess," Kevin said, abnormally bitter about it.
"It's a bit dainty for my particular taste but that's not what matters," I said as I stared at it.
"I know but I told you before, it's just a placeholder. I'll get you one you truly deserve if and when the time comes," Avi said with a slight smile.
I looked up at him and shook my head. "Like I said, it doesn't matter."
"Wait a minute, hold up. So after I left?" Kirstie asked, her eyes just as wide as everyone else's.
"I listened," I finished with a shy smile.
"When's the wedding?" Mitch asked, never taking his hand away from Scott's.
"There isn't one. It's a promise ring."
"It's sweet," Kevin said with a hesitant smile.
"But you just said you hated it," Avi replied.
"That's because I didn't know she got it from you."
"You owe me five bucks." A collection of gasps echoed through the room as everyone's attention shifted to Scott. His eyes were closed but from the reaction, everyone heard his voice.
A glimmer of hope shined in Mitch's eyes, but it soon died when we didn't hear anything else. It was like we imagined it.
We all sat back, our eyes trained on our friend with solemn looks. "Pay up sweetie."
Mitch nearly screamed as he jumped up and found himself staring into two ocean blue eyes.
"I'll go get the doctor," Esther said and immediately hopped up from her seat and ran out. Everyone crowded around the bed, expressing their reliefs and worries until the doctor came in.
We decided to go wait in the waiting room, everyone's mood much lighter than it had been before now that Scott was awake. It didn't even take ten minutes for the doctor to meet us out there. "We still want to keep him overnight to make sure nothing happens, but if everything's clear, he should be good to go home tomorrow so long as he takes it easy."
With that, he walked away, leaving us alone. Avi had his arm around me, but I kept squirming, trying to shake the feeling of being watched. I looked around the room. Besides the group, there were only a few people, but none seemed to be watching. Maybe it's just me.
"Do you mind helping me move some stuff around in my room?" I asked Avi as I looked up at him with a smile, the corners of my lips tilting up even more when he nodded his head.
"I think I'm gonna stay here," Mitch said. I smiled and nodded in understanding before walking over and pulling him into a tight hug. "Told you he's gonna be fine." I pulled away, kissing his cheek, and turned before walking towards the exit, Avi by my side.
"It's not my fault. They have three other people." I paused, picking up on the end of a conversation. I know, eavesdropping was bad, but this was different. I knew that voice. Avi took a few more steps before taking notice that I wasn't next to him and turned around.
"What is it?" His words went in one ear and out the other as I turned around to see a female. She had her head down and her hair pulled up in a baseball cap, but that didn't take away from the shape of her face and her voice. Both were too familiar to me. I saw her glance up and immediately dart her head back down as if she hoped I didn't see her. Too late.
I calmly walked over, rearing my hand back and falling it into a fist. A mere moment later, it connected with her face, hard enough to send her reeling in her seat. Her hat flew off her head and waves of dark brown hair tumbled down past her shoulders as she held her face. "That's for trying to ruin my relationship!" I yelled, easily catching the attention of everyone in the room. I looked over to the nurse to see her wide-eyed and on the phone.
I turned and took a few steps before stopping and walking back over, my fist connecting with her jaw a second time. "That's for having the guts to show your face when we're having a crisis."
I felt Avi grab my arm. "Come on before security gets here," he said as he tugged on me. I walked with him to the exit and stopped, taking a few steps back.
"Hold on, I forgot something," I said as I turned and hurried back in the same direction, punching Catherine a third and final time, but this time I could hear a few laughs. "And that's just because you're a bitch."
This time I felt Avi grab my arm and pull on it roughly, yanking me towards the door, but I didn't mind. I was satisfied. He didn't say anything as we drove back to my apartment, and he wouldn't look at me. I didn't think I pissed him off that badly. I played with my ring until we got back.
He got out without a word and headed towards the entrance with me in tow. He didn't speak until we got into the apartment and the door was closed. "Upstairs. Now." There was something in his voice that made me know I didn't want to argue with him. I hurried upstairs and to my room without a word.
I stood near the entrance and stared down the stairs. I could hear clicks as the doors were locked and downstairs got progressively darker as the lights were turned out. I finally saw him coming up and I gave him a curiously look. "Why did you lock all the doors? It's not like anyone is coming."
"Just a precaution."
"That doesn't answer my question," I said as I stepped back, letting him in the room. He walked in and closed the door, locking it behind him.
His voice was at least an octave lower, a sound I was all too familiar with but hadn't heard in a while. I missed it. He took several steps closer to me, taking the belt attached to my shirt in his hands and tugging the strings and letting them fall next to my sides. He was close enough that I could feel his beard tickling my cheek, causing my lips to tilt up in a small smile as he spoke. "Because I don't plan on either of us leaving this room for quite some time."
A/N: I ALMOST KILLED SCOTT but I didn't have the heart. I just couldn't...you're welcome.
