Blood was pumping through my veins as my heart pounded inside of me, feeling as if I were to move another muscle, it would burst through my chest. Nothing but the sound of the music and the counts I have repeated a thousand times over filled my head as I focused on every move I made, not missing a single beat. Before I knew it, the whole team was on the ground after doing our jump split, and in union, we all put our arms up and gave a final wave as the crowd roared for us. One by one, the girls stood up and we made our way back to our section of the gym in a single file line. My breathing was heavy, but I knew my team and I did good.
Feeling a tap on my shoulder, my head whipped around and I came face to face with one of my friends on the drill team. Her cheeks were rosy and beads of sweat were forming on her forehead from the multiple kicks and jumps we had just performed, her green eyes sparkling and full of excitement as she spoke,
"Everyone loved it! Mrs. Shea was so right for letting you choreograph this week's dance routine, it was so much fun to perform!" She spoke gleefully, the wide smile stretched across her face making it hard for me to not give one in return.
"Thank you so much! I was worried that the crowd wouldn't like it, but I'm glad to hear you liked performing it. I know it was a bit tougher than our other routines, but you guys did so good, I'm really proud." I nodded, the compliment causing her already gigantic smile to grow even wider. It happens every time I compliment someone. They smile as if I just told them they won a million bucks or something. For no reason, I am one of the most adored students in Atkins High School and don't get me wrong, I love the attention, but sometimes the reactions get old. Almost everyone treats me like I'm some sort of royalty. Except for my best friend, Lilith, of course, who is currently making her way towards me since the pep-rally ended over five minutes ago. Standing up, I threw my arms around the shorter girl, causing her to let out a laugh as she playfully pushed me away. "Gross! You're all sweaty!" she exclaimed as I rolled my eyes.
Lilith was about an inch shorter than me, standing at five foot three. Her light brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail and a few flaps from her cheer skirt were flipped upward, but she still managed to look perfect nonetheless. She was captain of the school's cheer squad, as well as the robotics team, theatre club, student council, NHS, color guard, art club, floral club, chess club, and she's gone to state every year in choir. Not to mention she gets straight A's and manages to work two jobs on top of it. We were the power duo of the school, and not everyone was fond of Lilith, but she is already far more successful than any of their parents.
"Oh hush, you're pretty wet yourself." I grinned, playfully nudging her shoulder as she rolled her eyes in return.
"Yeah yeah, can we go to your house? I left my jacket at your there and I need it for the game tonight."
"Yeah sure, let's get out of here. I asked Aiden to buy a pizza for us for when we get home after the game, so hopefully he actually remembered something for once in his life." I muttered, grabbing my bag and swinging it over my shoulder. We began to walk across the gym towards the exit, Lilith twirling her lanyard with her hand.
"You should give your brother more credit. He's not that bad."
This caused me to look at her with furrowed brows, shaking my head, "Well, you don't live with him and have to deal with his stupid antics and his stupid stoner friends every day."
Lilith shrugged and looked away, "Still." she murmured, tugging her bottom lip between her teeth before changing the subject. "What type of pizza did you ask for?"
"Pepperoni." I nodded, pushing open the doors and walking outside, the wind hitting my face and causing both Lilith and I to shiver. We made our way over to her Range Rover, throwing our bags in the backseat before sliding in. The drive to my house took only fifteen minuets, and once we arrived I saw two vehicles parked outside. A black four door GMC, and a pastel yellow mini cooper.
"Oh great," I huffed as we made our way up the pavement, "Charlotte is here. I'm not sure who the other vehicle belongs to, though. I've never seen it before. Have you?" I asked, unlocking the door and stepping inside onto the plush white carpet. I kicked off my dance shoes and set my backpack down, the sound of two male voices and one female one reaching my ears. Lilith shook her head, sending one last glance at the truck outside before closing the door and kicking off her cheer shoes.
"Nope. Never seen it before in my life." She shrugged as we made our way into the kitchen to be greeted by my brother sitting at the kitchen table with Charlotte hanging all over his arm. Her long blonde hair was covering most of his forearm as she gazed up at him, batting her spider like eyelashes. Gag.
Sitting beside Charlotte was a random redheaded guy I didn't recognize. His red hair was shaved down to an almost buzz cut, and he had a pair of piercing green eyes. His freckles were faint, but they were there and his skin was a beautiful milky white color. To say in the least, he was gorgeous, but he came off as arrogant and cocky.
"Well hello ladies." He said, causing both Lilith and I to arch an eyebrow simultaneously, "Care to accompany me to a room upstairs?"
"Excuse me?" Lilith gasped, not used to being spoken to in such a crude manner. "I'll have you know I do not just 'accompany' people to random rooms. You could at least buy me dinner first."
The boy seemed a bit shocked by her response. I guess he wasn't used to being turned down, but that shock soon faded away and a smirk graced his features.
"Maybe I will. Dinner at eight, yeah?"
Lilith let out a soft chuckle and pretended to think for a minute before meeting his gaze, "Sorry, my schedule is pretty packed tonight. If you come to the game, maybe you'll get lucky and get some fifth quarter action."
I bit my tongue to hold back a laugh as I saw redheaded beauty's eyes light up. This poor guy actually thought he was going to get some. Lilith was a major flirt, but she hardly ever acted on it, and when she did, it was kept very low key.
Aiden let out a cough and pried a very clingy Charlotte away from his arm as he looked over at red head who's name I still didn't know, "Hey uh, Delcan, Isn't is time for you to leave or something?"
Lilith gave my brother a furtive glance and he looked back at her through his thick eyelashes, his shoulders shrugging a bit. "Aiden, you ruin all my fun."
Just as Aiden was about to respond, he was cut off by Delcan's chair scratching against the floor as he stood up. "Actually, I do have to go. But I'll make sure to swing by the game." He nodded, giving Lilith a wink before making his way to the door and leaving. Charlotte was soon standing up, running her fingers through her blonde hair.
"Well, I should get going too. I need to wax before tonight's game. You never know who might be there." She grinned, her head bobbling like it was full of air. "Tootles." She waved, her fingers wiggling before she grabbed her silver sparkly backpack and went the way Delcan left. Once they were both gone, an awkward silence settled among the three of us and I shifted uncomfortably.
"Welp," I said, looking back and forth between my best friend and my brother, "Shall we go get dressed for the game Lilith?" I asked and she nodded her head with such force it made her ponytail bob. I hooked our pinkies together and dragged her upstairs to my room, shutting and locking the door behind us. We began to get dressed, and though I was excited for the game, there was a feeling in the pit of my stomach that something was going to go terribly wrong.
