Valentine comes from the Roman word Valentine, a term used to define early Christian martyrs. Long before Valentine's Day started being celebrated as the day of love or lover's day, it was celebrated to honor these Valentines on February 14, mainly the Valentine of Rome and the Valentine of Terni. The Valentine of Terni, or popularly known, Saint Valentine was a third-century Roman saint on whose honor people celebrate Valentine's Day every year.

He was commemorated on February 14 and hence the day came to be widely known as Valentine's Day. Saint Valentine was associated with courtly love, wherein people courted each other before getting married in a chivalrous manner. When the famous Saint passed away he was buried in Via Flaminia near Ponte Milvio which was considered to be the northern part of Rome in those days. Saint Valentine is widely recognized as the Valentine of Terni, but sometimes people recognize Valentine of Rome to be Saint valentine as well. This is still an unresolved or better say an unanswered question as to who actually was Saint Valentine, The Valentine of Terni, or the Valentine of Rome, or the two of them together.
