~•~Chapter Thirty-Four~•~

Start from the beginning

"I'm going," I sighed. "I can either leave with you, or I can wait until you're gone and sneak out. Your choice."

Thayer closed his eyes in defeat. "Fine, you can come. But, you're not leaving my side for one second, okay?"

I wanted to refute, tell Mr. Possessive that I can take care of myself. I don't need him! I can do it! However, this situation is too dangerous to let my pride interfere with my logical thinking. If I'm away from Thayer, his wolf will be worried, resulting in his distraction and possible downfall. And the scenario works vice verse as well. It's better if we stay together.

I leaned up and planted a sweet kiss on Thayer's lips. "I love you."

His eyes were so warm and tender. I'm sure mine looked the same. "I love you, too. So much."

Suddenly, the front door bursted open, causing Thayer and I too spring apart. Jackson, a young member of the pack, came barreling inside. He had a flushed face and wild, tear filled eyes.

"You guys have to see this."

Thayer and I were on our feet instantly, following Jackson out the door and into the forest. We came upon a clearing, which was full of crying pack members. I couldn't see what they were crowded around, but I knew it must not be good.

Someone saw us. They instantly yelled directions to give us space. Thayer and I pushed through the clearing.

I wish that we hadn't.

Someone had burned a perfect circle around the corpse, followed by a  perfectly symmetrical sentence that caused my knees to buckle. Thayer clutched my hand tightly.

If he can't beat me, who can?

The corpse laying at our feet was Thayer's dad.

Heather hasn't gotten here yet, but I'm sure she felt the bond breaking. She knows her mate is dead.

I glanced at Thayer, but he looked passive. I squeezed his hand. He didn't respond.

The infamous Jarred Holt was dead.

Step three: initiate paranoia.

If he can't beat me, who can?

I'm starting to wonder about that myself.

But then, she spoke up.

"I nominate Thayer Holt for the Alpha position!"

Heather Holt came into the clearing, eyes red and face pale. Her hair was a mess, she had a snotty nose, and she looked so weak I'm not sure how she was standing. However, the look in her eyes and the strong emotion in her voice made her beautiful. She was an avenging angel.

"I second the nomination!" Someone called.

Thayer seemed to come back to himself as every pack member called for his leadership. He looked around at every face, wonder in his eyes at the support and love he was receiving. I felt my heart swell with pride.

I told Thayer once to be the Alpha I knew he was capable of being. And now, it was finally happening.

It wasn't June. He didn't fight his father to the death.

But Thayer Holt, my mate, is now Alpha.

"We head out at midnight," Thayer's strong voice rang throughout the meeting room. "We split into three group, each one taking a different vantage point. We will stake out the house, and once we're sure the coast is clear, we will descend. Remember, the object here is stealth, not destruction."

Someone made a noise of disagreement in the back of their throat. I agreed with them.

I know that Thayer's plan is smart, but I can't help but want to destroy everything Drake owns.

One day, I promised myself. Thayer squeezed my hand like he knew what I was thinking.

Once the room cleared out, I turned to face Thayer.

"How are you?"

He let out a deep sigh. "Reality hasn't sunk in yet. I'm Alpha and my dad's dead."

I wrapped my arms around him. He hugged me back tightly.

"He's was the biggest jackass I've ever met in my life...but he was still my dad, you know?"

I nodded. I did know, better than I should.

"You make a great Alpha," I whispered. "I can see hope in the pack. You're the change we needed."

Thayer let out a small chuckle. "You know what you just said, right?"

I crinkled my eyebrows together in confusion.

"You said 'we.' You just included yourself in the pack."

"Well, you are Alpha now. I guess I have no choice but to be your Luna."

The words felt good on my tongue. Thayer's breath caught in the back of his throat. I smiled.

"Say it again."
