She brushed her long brown hair back out of her pale face, but it was no use, the wind put up a stronger fight and blew it right back in her face. She looked up as a flock or birds flew overhead, traveling south in search of warmth from the frigid December air. The wind was rustling through the bare trees, as she walked aimlessly on.

Cedar Park was dead this time of year, no children running through the trees, no barking dogs, no birds waiting patiently for bread crumbs from a passerby. It was deserted, she found the silence peaceful and would come here to think clear her mind when her family was too distracting and she had nowhere else to go.

It was getting late though and she had to be home for dinner soon. She started back up her road until she came to her big brick home, the only brick house in her neighborhood, which meant it stuck out a lot.

She opened the door and the savory smell of dinner instantly hit her in the face. "Mom, I'm home!"

Her little sister, Trish, skipped into the kitchen, "Dinner is almost ready, mom says to go wash up."

Trish was always bossy and thought she was better than Emery, even though she was 3 years younger. She supposed sisters were always like that though, trying to show the other one up, and Trish probably saw her as being bossy, too.

She didn't respond and brushed past her sister and up the stairs, to her room and closed her door. Her phone buzzed, it was a message from one of her good friends. She picked it up and read it. "Don't bother coming over later, after what you did to Maggie, I don't think you should come around anymore...since you 2 aren't friends anymore, and she's like my bff, so it won't really work out, sorry"

She threw the phone onto her bed, not caring what anyone thought. Everything would be back to normal in a day or two, Maggie couldn't stay mad at her best friend for long. Even if things didn't take a turn for the better, she knew she could always just make new friends easily. Everyone liked her and thought of her as a really nice, outgoing girl who could never hurt a fly.

She walked over to her closet, picking out a pair of ripped jeans and a pink sweater. Then, as she was carefully applying a rosy pink lipstick to her dull, chapped lips, she heard a knock at her door. She jumped back but then realized it was only her nosy sister. "God, what's taking you so long? Dinner is gonna get cold soon if you don't hurry it up."

I looked at her, trying to think of something I could say but I just responded, "Sorry, I'll be down in a minute.

Trish turned around and slammed my door shut, as she always did, and went back down the stairs. She just walked over to the window and gazed out at the sunset hopelessly, dreading school the next day. She wondered what she had ever done wrong, then left the thoughts behind and found her way downstairs, to the dining room with her family, where she knew that at least two people still loved her.
