My Rollercoaster Morning

Start from the beginning

Everybody went quiet.

“Mr. Principal. Good morning sir!” Both teachers greeted him. We stood and greeted him as well.

“Good morning to you too, and to you my students.” He said to us smiling. I watch the man in front of us talk to the two teachers. They were both heatedly talking still in hushed voices while the principal listened patiently. I didn’t remember him at first but when he said that he knew my dad and is in my whole cover, I can finally remember him as one of dad’s more frequent guest. He was aloof but kind and always had a treat for us when he sees me or Ren.

The principal asked for the papers and started to scan them.

“Park Chan Yeol.” He said. Chanyeol immediately stood. “Please solve this equation on the board.”  The principal said and wrote down an equation I had forced on them to learn at the last moment.  Chanyeol looked at it for a moment, math teacher looked smug, then his face cleared and he walked to the board and answered the equation. He finished after a few minutes

“Very good. Please sit down. Next Kim Joon Myun. The next equation.” The principal said and wrote down another equation. Suho flashed me a smile before going to the front. I relaxed back into my seat and doodle useless drawings. Kai has a habit of tearing up my notes if he sees my solving anything out of our lessons.

After Suho was called Chen came next then Lay. The two teachers watch as they all solve the equations given to them. I felt myself swelling with pride. I had to try very hard not to beam and cheer because math teacher keeps glancing at me with suspicion in her eyes.

“Can we ask Florence Kahn to solve a problem?” She asked the principal.

“Of course. Ms. Khan please solve this-“ Principal said but math teacher interrupted him.

“Can I give the equation Principal?” She asked.

“Go ahead.” Principal said. Math teacher took out a book and wrote down a complex equation. I looked at it, solving it in my head already. I know that equation; dad used to have it as a game for me and Ren whoever solves it first gets whatever food he/she wants.  I stood.

“Florence don’t solve it.” Kai softly said. I looked at him confused and back at the board. Why won’t I solve it? I already know the answer.  “Sit down.”

The principal watched me with guarded eyes.

“Flo.” Kai said again. I sighed. He’s right. It was an advance calculus equation, something I should not know exist. I was blinded on wiping that smug look on math teacher’s face.

“I don’t know that equation Ma’am.” I said. My mouth tasted bitter, I just hated to pretend not to know an answer when I know it.

“Of course you won’t that is advance calculus.” Our adviser said. “Really Ms. Sung. Florence is not that advanced.”

Anybody who saw my frown will assume I was frowning because I didn’t know the answer. My friends know I’m frowning for exactly the opposite reason.  They were all hiding their smiles.

“Can you give her a more forgiving equation to solve Ms. Sung?” Principal asked with a twinkle in his eyes. He knew how frustrated I felt.  Ms. Sung, our math teacher, watched me for a moment, then erased the equation and wrote down a fairly simple one. The quadratic equation.  Seriously. I walk to the board and answered it slowly, very very slowly. I can imagine all my friends laughing hard in their heads at my expression.

“Very good Ms. Kahn, please go back to your seat.” Principal said. He then faced math teacher. “Do we still need to quiz them individually Ms. Sung or does this prove that they did study and not cheat?” he asked.
