A Different Year

I smiled light heartedly at the Morgan's as they opened their oak door.

Tesla Morgan, Jace Morgan, and Jaxx Morgan were all smiling and saying hey as we entered their home.

Of course this wasn't the first time we've been here, but it was New Years Eve, so of course it was different.

The atmosphere is what got me the most. All the bubbly, cheery people that were talking here and there and eating food from the kitchen and the red, brown, and white liquids that filled their cups. No doubt it was some sort of alcohol.

I looked at the different couples that were surrounding the couch's and TV and watched them until Jaxx pulled me out of my thoughts.

"Shayla!" He yelled and hugged me tightly, almost knocking me over.

I laughed and hugged him back. He was my best friend, always had been, always would be.

He had brown hair and freckled cheeks. He had black glasses that framed his hazel eyes, but he still managed to look perfect to me. And of course his look wouldn't be complete without dark pants and a checkered shirt.

"So Jaxx. Where's this girlfriend you've been speaking of for eternity? You haven't let me meet her!" I scolded him but then giggled.

He looked around nervously before scratching the back of his head. "Well... I don't know. Let me go find her!" And he dashed off.

"What was that all about?" Tesla asked me. I shrugged then smiled at her.

"How's your day going? I'm so excited I get to spend the last day of this year with you guys!" I squealed.

She chuckled as Jace snaked his arm around her waist. "It's been great. And im just as excited. I'm glad you and your mother could make it."

I smiled and we continued the light conversation for a while.

10:00 pm

"Mom!" I gasped when I saw her locking lips with a complete stranger. She giggled and moved back from him.

Oh no... Not a complete stranger. Just my history teacher!

"Oops." She giggled and went back to kissing him.

My palm connected with my face and I grunted. She's drunk. I knew I should've given her a few water bottles before coming here.

11:00 pm

"Hunter! Give it back!" I chased Hunter up the steps and to his bedroom. As soon as I got close enough to him I tackled him.

Hunter was Jaxxs best guy friend, but he had moved in with them a few months ago. He was cute, I'd admit. But he was absolutely annoying. He was a prankster and thought some of the stupidest stuff he did was the funniest, when in reality it wasn't. He had blonde hair and dimpled cheeks, was really tall and lean.

"This is an interesting position. I didn't know you felt this way about me, Shay." Hunter groaned.

I looked down at our entangled bodies and scoffed at him. Of course me straddling him wasn't the greatest picture, but he took my phone!

I rolled my eyes and held out my hand. "Just give it back all ready."

He gave it to me and I rolled off him, going back down stairs.

11:57 pm

I watched the TV as everyone started piling into the living room area waiting for the ball to drop.

I looked around for Jaxx and couldn't find him. Where had he even gone? After he said he would have to find his girlfriend he completely disappeared.

I heard and felt all the excitement forming as we waited.

I shrugged and turned back to the TV. On the screen there were tons of people hugging in anticipation for the New Year. I couldn't blame them though. I was just as excited for them. Why? I have no idea. I just like the idea of a new start I guess.

"Woo-hoo!" Screaming started around me and I laughed.

"10!" They started.

I looked around again hoping to find Jaxx.

I found his silhouette in the crowd, making his way towards me with a determined look in his face.

I smiled as he came up to me.

His arms wrapped around my waist.

I gave him a look of confusion before he started leaning in, my eyes grew wide.

His face was so close to mine, he looked down at my lips and I looked at his.

He smirked and leaned in further.

His breath hit my face, causing me to melt.

His lips hovered over mine.

I melted into his arms as he kissed me passionately. Who knew my best friend could actually kiss this well?

Everyone was cheering and kissing around us but it just sounded like white noise to me.

I smiled against his lips and he slowly pulled away.

"So.. that girlfriend I had... was imaginary. Well sort of. I was just waiting for the right moment to really ask her to be mine." He chuckled. "So will you? Be my girlfriend that is?"

I laughed and kissed him again, letting his answer be known in the kiss.
