Hand in hand, they walked down the beach. Their bare feet on the wet sand sent an unknown chill in their bodies. Earlier, the mere presence of each other would have been enough to keep them warm. But the time had changed. Their hands were still locked, but the bird of love had escaped their heart's cages.
"My heart is a bird,
Trapped in your cage.
Your heart is the letter,
Written on my page,
And our love is that play,
Which is a hit on the stage."
Those lines that he had written for her to celebrate a year of their love seemed a lot distant today. The first time she had seen him, he looked a complete outsider. A pencil trapped in his mouth, fingers caressing his beard, and eyes glued to the sky. In this fast moving world, he was wasting their precious seconds. Yet, when she read the words written in his pad, her heart took an instant flip.
"Like the colors of that rainbow,
Let our hearts also glow,
However hard those clouds try,
We'd never let our love to bow."
They were not written for her, yet the words attracted her. She still doesn't know why, but the girl who had never liked poetry before felt an urge to add some lines of her own. And without thinking what the others would say, she had blurted them out in a crowded train.
"Let me be the drops,
To shine in your light,
Let's together make our rainbow,
And show this world a wonderful sight."
Those lines had broken his trance. When both their eyes met for the first time, both saw a color of love in them. People may say it was at first sight, but only they knew that is was on first lines. The lines of a rainbow. The lines of their rainbow. Rainbow had become a symbol of their love since then.
Even today, it was the prospect of watching a rainbow which had made them stop their cars and wander down the beach. And nature didn't disappoint as well. Amidst all the dark clouds, a little crack opened up spreading a ray of light over the falling drops. Like it happened six years ago, the drops and light mingled again to grace this world with a rainbow. Their rainbow.
This rainbow was a witness to all the colors of their relationship. It had seen the color of their smiles, it had painted the color of their romance, and had even erased the color of their fights. It was there when they shared this beach the first time, when they kissed standing in these waves; when he proposed her under dying rays of the sun. It was right there.
He still remembered that day like it happened last night. In a couple of months since they first met, they had been out together many times. But that was the first time they had walked down this beach. The plan had been finalized spontaneously like many other things in their life. "Where are you?" she had asked over the phone. He was passing by this beach then. "Why don't you wait there, I'll meet you in an hour?" He remembered saying an okay even before she had finished her question. And just like that, the most important day of their life was set up.
That hour had seemed like an eternity. The waves were crashing over the sand, the sun was peeking from between the clouds, the seagulls soared the sky making it their own. But none of it amused him at that moment. His eyes were fixed on the road leading to the beach, waiting. Finally, her car arrived. Clad in a simple jeans and t-shirt, she may not have been a girl to turn heads, but she was still an angel to him.
It had started with a walk, but soon her hand had found his and they were locked in no time. Her soft fingers fit into his perfectly. Leaving the wet sand behind, they had ventured into the water. The sun was racing towards the horizon, yet in those dying moments, it didn't forget to cast a beautiful rainbow across the sky. Holding his hand tight, she had leaned over to rest her head on his shoulder. He had lightly allowed his head to rest over hers. That was the first time they had seen a rainbow together. A rainbow not adorned with the seven colors, but painted with the color of their trust.
