CHAPTER THREE
"Tara come here, you've left the marshmallows out again" Sophie called out.
I came out of my bedroom and into the kitchen. Sophie was putting on her jacket and the bag of marshmallows was on the bench, marshmallows spilling out of it onto the bench. Sophie has shoulder length brown hair, and sparkly hazel eyes. She's only four inches taller than me and is four years older.
"Can't you put them away, you only need to take a least 3 steps and I needed to take ten just to get here" I asked.
"You count your steps? Anyway that's not the point... When will you learn Tara" she said though I knew she wasn't being too serious.
"Put the marshmallows away and I'm going shopping, I should be back before your shift at the tavern starts... When does it start anyway"
"Umm seven" I said hesitantly.
"Seven!" Her soft face turned hard, " I know we need the money but you know how I feel about night shifts, we live in a bad neighboured you know that and your shift won't finish till midnight so you'll be walking home alone in the middle of the night, open to t all the people out there who might want to attack you" she replied starting to raise her voice.
She turned around and opened the door.
"I'll be back soon, stay out of trouble" her voice muffled by the scarf she was putting around her neck.
Without looking back she walked out shutting the door with a slam behind her.
I was so angry with her,it wasn't liked I asked for the night shift it's was just that is was the only shift open for tonight. I decided to take a walk to cool off and get rid of the anger boiling like a bubble. I walked four blocks before I heard the scream that shattered the silence and echoed from building to building, I started sprinting as fast as my stumpy legs would carry me towards the scream which sounded just like Sophie's.
"Sophie where are you" I stopped out side of the ally way where the scream had came from.
"Tara run don't come down here, run just run" I don't know what made me but I ignored her warnings and kept walking down the ally way which smelt of rotten foods and rubbish. I kept walking until I saw the scene that changed my life forever. A dirty homeless man had Sophie up a against the wall with a knife up against her throat.
"Ahh we have an audience now excellent, come closer my dear"
But I didn't, I just stood there standing, I was too shocked to move.
"I guess if my words didn't move you" he said then chuckled, "this might" he said as he drove the knife into Sophie throat, she let out as muffled cry yelp kind of sound and the was the last sound and breath she ever took.
"Sophie no please don't be dead" I said then turned my head so I didn't have to look at the blood coming out of her wound in her neck, "your the only one who gets me through life and now your dead"
Tears rose to the surface of my tear ducks but they didn't spill over, they kind of just hung there. The next thing I knew the man had advanced on me and was holding me up against the same wall he had held Sophie.
"Now you my sweetie, quite a pretty face you've got there, shame it will be covered in dirt soon and blood soon" he snickered.
I closed my eyes and tried to think positive. This is all a dream, I'll wake up in the morning and Sophie will be there at the kitchen table with her daily cup of tea. All of a sudden something made contact with the side of the mans head and I was released from his grip, I heard him sink to the ground and the muffled sounds coming from his mouth but I zoned out to every other sound until a males voice came from the right side of me, I didn't dare open my eyes.
"I don't do it often but I decided to spare your life" the voice said "just don't go looking for danger again ok, you don't really suit it"
I went to protest and tell him he was wrong, except he had just saved my life and he was properly right.
"Oh and Tara, you can open your eyes now"
I opened my eyes slowly and saw no one there, was I imagining things now or did that really just happen I wasn't really sure, instead a sat down. It wasn't long until I realised I was sitting in a pool of blood and it wasn't mine. It was a combination of my attackers blood and Sophie's blood, both were dead. I got up and ran, I couldn't believe this was happening what has God got against me, was I doing something wrong and I just didn't know it.
