Chapter 1

My life has never been spectacular. Okay, maybe that's a bit overdramatic. I had a nice childhood, I was raised normally. My parents were nice. Of course, I was bullied like any other child. That's when things got a little... wrong. The name calling didn't bother me, it was the fights. I had one friend back then. Goofy Oliver. He got picked on for his big feet and buck teeth. He told me his parents couldn't afford dentistry. I honestly don't know what happened to him after school. He was always strong minded, so I'm sure he's fine.

Anyway, Oliver got beat up a lot. I was always there to help him, so I got bullied too. One time, some upperclassmen were beating him up real bad. He had a black eye and everything. It was just like in the movies. So I went up and socked one of them right in the nose. They toppled over and groaned and cried. It was winter, so I was wearing gloves. I pulled Oliver up and ran with him to where I saw the bullies hide their bags. I later found out that I broke the boy's nose, so of course my gloves were covered in blood. He took off the gloves carefully and stowed them in one of the bags.

That's when my criminal career began. Well, except for the fact that I became an office worker in the social media department instead. Being a criminal must be fun, though. No boss to worry about, best of all. Of course, there's no pay unless you steal it but that's a fair price to pay, right? Yeah, I've never been very smart. I wanted to be a detective when I was younger. I could never be that smart.

I drove into work on a horrid Monday morning without any coffee. I don't even like coffee, actually. It's far too bitter for me. When I do need it to stay awake, I put so much sugar in that it's equal to the fat content of a McDonald's Cheeseburger. I get my laptop from the seat beside me and step out of the car, shutting and locking the door behind me. I was smart enough to know that no one would hesitate in trying to open the door and stealing some pocket change. Our community was the type to do that. I smoothed out my dress and walked into work.

As soon as I stepped through the revolving door, I felt something was wrong. It just wasn't right. A few steps into the lobby and I saw why. There was a body on the floor, a single stab wound to his chest, blood only slightly staining the brilliant silver suit he wore every day. His name was Kenny, and he had been murdered. It was obvious because upon closer inspection the bloody knife was stabbed through the floor, staining the carpet.

Did I mention I have the morning shift?

I'm sorry. I never really cared about Kenny. He's certainly not someone I would cry over. If I know who had done it, I might have sent them a 'Thank You' card. One of those cheesy Hallmark ones. Nothing big. Just a little gesture so I wouldn't wind up dead on the carpet of this establishment as well.

Jessie, Kenny's wife came in after me that morning. She cried as she called the cops and I kept handing her tissues. The police arrived and carted the body off. That was when it began. The start of a string of events that lead to where I am today. It's not like I'm unhappy, though. Everything is perfectly fine.
