Chapter one

My alarm clock starts playing the continuous, deafening rhythm and instantly my mind is awake. I hear the sound of the buzz it makes as the sound waves dance around my room, trying its hardest to wake me up with a sudden jolt. I hit the alarm clock furiously and twist onto my other side, trying not to think too much about the first day back at school. I dread the busy hall ways, the sympathetic looks both teachers and students give me, and the constant attention from my friends. I'm not a sociable person at all. In fact, I'm rather unsociable due to the lack of seeing people this Christmas holiday. I spent time with my family, but they wound me up enough to give it my best shot to spend the rest of the holidays stuck up here in my bedroom, begging my mum not to let anyone see me.

I hear the faint knock on my door and look up to see my mum's calm face pop around the door to see how I am.

"Good morning, Katherine. How are you feeling?" My mum's soft, joyful tone relaxes every muscle in my body, and as she opens my curtains I pull the covers over my head so I'm not blinded by the early morning daylight. I struggle to get up, standing on the box of tissues I used to tame my wild flu over the holiday as i get out of my bed. My mum comes over to give me a hug, kissing my forehead quickly, and walks to the door way, stopping before she closes my door.

"Breakfast will be on the table when you're ready, don't be too long." I wonder how I'm going to be too long, with nobody to impress in school I don't take long at all. I pick out my black skinny jeans, a grey vest and a The 1975 sweatshirt to wear for the day. Once I'm dressed, I do my make up and curl my hair, taking the necklace my dad gave me when i was seven and putting it around my neck, along with my black choker I recently bought with my own money.

The smell of homemade waffles sends me running down the stairs with a big grin on my face, ready to eat. Excitement builds up inside of me when i recognise the smell of my dad's special waffles. Since he died we haven't made them, and it excites me that we're finally making something he used to make. Before he died, he taught me and mum how to make them so that we could make them and be reminded of him, and the smell brings tears of joy to my eyes straight away. Dad made us happy as a family and mum fell head over heels when they met. She still tells me the story of how they met and it makes me truly happy to know how happy they made each other.

I walk into the kitchen and soon enough excitement runs through my whole body, making me jump to my feet with joy.

"Grandma!" I squeal as I run over to her to give her a massive hug. "I haven't seen you in so long, I've missed you," I say, hugging her once more.

"We were visiting your fathers grave, so we decided to come and visit you whilst you're here," she explains, with a smile on her face. "Here, have some waffles; what would you like on yours?"

"Hmm, chocolate and ice cream please." This has been the best day in a while.
