CHAPTER 2

She wasn't ready. It was too soon, only one month since the funeral. It wasn't fair. But life wasn't fair in general.

Skylar and Dean got out of the beat up car together.

"Call me when you want to be picked up," Mike mumbled to Dean as they got out. Dean nodded and Mike drove away.

"I can't do this," Skylar said as her vision blurred with unshed tears. She turned her gaze from Dean. Her eyes roamed to the tombstones with names on them. Some had flowers, colorful ones. Despite the bright colors sprinkled around the cemetery, nothing could eliminate the heavy sensation that fell upon the land.

"I know it's hard. But you can't avoid this forever. I promise you I'll be here the entire time," Dean told her as he touched her arm. Skylar looked at him and without a word, she grabbed his hand. She started towards the cemetery.

Skylar continuously glanced at Dean while they walked towards her mother's grave. She observed the way he took confident strides. His jet black hair perfectly spiked. Dean's green eyes sparkled in the sunlight. He was slightly taller than her. Today, he was wearing his usual jeans and t-shirt. Skylar realized they were still holding hands and she self consciously let go.

They approached a willow tree that was randomly planted in the middle of the lonely cemetery. Under it was a grave, a single grave. Monica Adam's grave. Skylar's mother's grave.

"Hey, Mom," Skylar whispered as she sat down in front of the tombstone. Dean sat next to her.

"Mrs. Adams," Dean nodded. Silence took over until Skylar chose to speak again.

"Dad has been beating me again," Skylar told the grave as she played with the grass. Skylar's dad has always beaten her but her mom had always stopped him. Now she wasn't there to help her.

Her mother had died in a car accident over a month ago.

"I hope you're doing okay, Mrs. Adams," Dean said. Skylar sobbed. There was no use holding back all those tears. Dean sat there and held her wordlessly.
