Prologue

It was a calm summer afternoon. I was in my living room sitting on the couch watching Nemo. My mother was in the kitchen baking cookies. The oven dinged and I ran into the kitchen. My mom pulled the cookies out of the oven and set them on the counter. I am only 7 years old so I had to stand on my tippy-toes to see them. They were blue, chocolate chip cookies. My favorite! I tried to grab one but it was hot and I instantly pulled my hand away. "Owwie!" I said. My mom just shook her head smiling," Careful sweety, they just got out of the oven." She said. I just pouted and ran back to the couch and watched Nemo. Suddenly the door swung open and my stepfather Gabe came in. I could smell alcohol on him from here. He walked into the kitchen and started yelling at my mother. He said something about her hiding money from him. He grabbed her by the hair and threw her to the floor. He kicked her in the face and she was unconscious and he continued to kick her in the stomach. Then he took out his switchblade and slit her throat. He then noticed me staring at him in horror crying. He walked over to me and tried to grab me but I ducked under him and ran out the door. I ran out of the building and just keep running. I ran into a park but I was getting really tired. I looked back and saw Gabe chasing me. I ran through the woods into a clearing. There was a man and a women sitting by a fire. With my last bit of strength I jumped over the fire....
