Shift POV

___________

Samson starts to grab the teleportation marbles, but I stop him. He gives me a weird look, so I give him one back. I really hate it when people give me weird looks. As you can probably imagine, it happens pretty often, though it is weird that superheroes and villains running around and fighting each other is normal. People who have superpowers have always existed, but they weren't accepted by people without powers until a few hundred years ago. There was almost a world war Ⅳ over whether supers should be allowed to live among normal people. Some people wanted all supers to be killed or imprisoned. Those people have since then mysteriously disappeared.

"A high-speed chase is the perfect opportunity to test out my new hoverboard," I tell Samson.

"Oh yeah. Great idea," He replies. I can't tell if he's being sarcastic or if he's actually agreeing with me. I set the hoverboard on the ground and step onto it. It immediately begins to rise. After its five feet in the air it stops and hovers.

"Um, Samson. How do I steer it?" I ask, suddenly realizing I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm quite sure I didn't take Hoverboarding 101 in school. Not that it's an actual class. A sudden gust of wind wrecks my balance and I slip off. I scream. I wait to hit the hard concrete, but luckily I land on Samson. Well, lucky for me, not so much for him.

"Ow!" He pushes me off him. He then gives me a short lecture on safety, the dangers of flying, and some other stuff I zoned out on. I have a short attention span. Eventually he gives me a quick lesson on how to use a hoverboard. He doesn't have a hoverboard so he's going to teleport and meet me at the restaurant over on the other side of town.

He disappears and seconds later I hear the wailing of sirens. I step onto the hoverboard and fly down the sidewalk. A bunch of people duck and move out of my way. The sirens get louder and I lean forward, making the hoverboard go faster. Soon the cops are far behind me. I go into a nearby clothing store and change out of my suit into shorts and a shirt. Then I teleport over to the restaurant.

Samson has changed out of his suit. He's wearing jeans and a shirt with a band on the front I've never heard of. Samson doesn't stand out in a crowd. He has blonde hair, green-blue eyes, and big nerdy glasses. He's sort of cute.

I cloak myself in a reality where I look the a normal, not superpower using person.

I stand out a little. I have long dark brown hair. Its really long. I keep it in a high ponytail and it still goes down to my knees. Some pieces of it are in small braids, because my hands always feel the need to do stuff, and braiding helps. It's from the years when I was addicted to the risky fun of pickpocketing. My eyes are heterochromic. One is brown and one is blue-hazel.

We order food and sit down at one of the tables outside. Samson gets a sandwich and I get soup. Samson says that its too hot out to eat soup but I eat it anyway.

Halfway through our meal the parking lot becomes a battlefield. There's not usually so much fighting in one day. Its the supervillain Slash and the superhero Wisp. My mom. What are the chances of that?

"Look at that!" Samson exclaims. "Dinner and a show."

"Yeah." I laugh bitterly. I hope they lose.

I never really got over my parents disowning me. I'm still holding a grudge. I know Nightmare will wish she was here. She still has a grudge against them, too.

I'm not sure if my mom will recognize me or not. She doesn't know Samson and won't recognize him, so I take his sunglasses.

"Nice disguise. I would never be able to tell it was you," he says mockingly. I throw a sugar packet at him. It hits him in the face. Looking back at the battle I see it has ended. Wisp won. She starts to walk away, but then she spots me.

"Hello, Force," she says, using my old superhero name. I am instantly angry. I'm not a superhero anymore. It was Nightmare who figured out my power was actually parallel worlds and helped me become stronger. My parents still think my power is force fields. I'm not going to to tell them what my power really is anytime soon.

"Its Shift," I tell her.

"Whatever." Her tone is condescending as she dismisses me. She turns to face Samson, a disgusted look on her stupid, makeup covered face. "Who are you?"

"Just a person," Samson says, a grin on his face. That grin is a trademark of his. He wears it as often he wears jeans. Practically all the time.

"You better not be dating this guy," she tells me disdainfully.

It angers me that she's butting into my social life. I'm definitely not dating Samson. I won't deny that he's good looking, but he's not my type. It angers me even more that Wisp thinks that she can control what I do. I'll date whoever the hell I want.

I look Samson in the eyes, and can tell he's thinking what I'm thinking. We lean across the table until our faces are just inches from each other. Then we kiss. I pull away, watching my mom's angry expression.

"You get better every time," I tell Samson, my voice loud enough for Wisp to hear.

I focus on making a small world around me and Samson. I make the world so that you can see through it from both sides, but my mom can't hear us or get within three feet of us.

"She can't hear us anymore," I tell Samson. He laughs.

"You're awesome, Shift. And a not a bad kisser."

He winks at me, but I know he doesn't mean it. He has a wonderful girlfriend he's been dating for almost three years. She's really nice, so I hope they stay together long enough for Samson to gather enough courage to propose.

Outside the world Wisp is getting angry that she can't hear us. She tries to walk toward me but runs into the side. She starts cursing so I make it so we can't hear her either. We finish our food and leave.

"Bye, Samson!" I yell. I don't hear his reply because I teleport away. I teleport right into my bedroom. Uncomfortable, I undress and put on my pajamas, which are just shorts and a sweatshirt. I collapse on the bed and fall asleep.
