Alex’s p.o.v
“ALEX LETS GO BUS IS HERE IN 10 MINUTES!” The familiar English accent of my mom rang through the house in a futile attempt to get me up. Today my intoxicated 10 week summer of partying is coming to an end as I enter junior year.
“Ahh shit.. YEAH OK MOM.” I rolled over to check the digital clock on my night stand. 6:51am. Only 9 minutes. Fuck she’s right I really need to go. Rise and shine Alex.
Barley touching the floor, I ran down the hall to the bathroom. With only enough time for brushing my teeth and hair, I had to hold my pee and get dressed. I pulled on a blink t I wore the other day off the floor and struggled to pull on my femininely tight pants (which were not helping the fact I really had to pee). I did another time check. 6:56am. Four minutes. I glided into some ratty flip flops, threw a bandana in my hair, grabbed my bag and ran for the door.
As I passed my mom on the way out she tried scolding me about how I should know better and should’ve woken up earlier but I didn’t stay around to listen. I really couldn’t give any less of a fuck about school anyway. Two more years Gaskarth, that’s all you need to put up with. Then it’s off to the good life.
I made it to the corner of my street but as I turned the corner, I saw the bus already picking kids up. I swear you could’ve mistaken me for Usain bolt if he was a 16 year old white boy trying to catch a school bus. Completely breathless, I did make the bus. I took the first open spot available and slumped in the seat feeling like I was about to enter cardiac arrest.
Once my breathing had stabilized, I looked around for a familiar face. A few seats back, me and my girlfriend Lisa locked eyes. She blew a kiss and motioned for me to check my phone. I smiled feeling my cheeks go pink as I turned back around in my seat. Before I decided to rummage around in my bag for my phone, I realized I didn’t recognize the tall lanky boy looking out the window seated to my left.
He had flippy skunk colored hair and seemed like he would weigh 120 soaking wet. He had a diamond stud earring and eye brows thicker than mine. That’s a first. He wore a blue plaid flannel with the sleeves rolled to his elbows and black skinny jeans that looked like they were squeezing his bladder even tighter than mine.
I decided to break the silence.
“Uh hey I’m Alex.” He pulled his eyes away from the window and was now fully focused on me. “I’ve never really seen you before.. You’re new?” No shit he was new. Smooth Alex.
“Yeah, I’m Jack.” His voice was a lot higher than I expected. Jacks face flushed a faint shade of red when we made eye contact. He must be nervous on account of the fact he literally doesn’t know one person so far. Jack continued, “I moved from England over the summer. My parents were offered a job and it’s all about money, yanno.”
“Are you serious? I moved from England when I was younger!” This was quite the coincidence. “Well Jack, if you’re from England why aren’t you speaking with one of their marvelous accents?” That was a pretty dumb question on account of the fact I’m from England and have a full blown American accent, but I’m just trying to make conversation with the kid.
“Oh I didn’t grow up there. I grew up here in the states. Idaho to be exact.” Idaho. The first things that came to mind were miles upon miles of potato farms.
“Well, I know how much it sucks to leave everything you’ve come to know behind. I can’t imagine what it’s like to do that twice. There were a few moments of silence between us before Jack changed that.
“So uhh… That girl a few seats back... Do you like her?”
Lisa. Well yeah, at this point me and Lisa had been together for 2 years now, but lately I’ve felt we don’t fit together the way we used to. I haven’t told her how I’ve been feeling yet, it would break her heart. I guess it’s just a matter of time with us honestly.
I answered the boy with, “Oh yeah, her names Lisa. We’ve been together since the start of freshman year. She’s pretty much my best friend… I love her.” I didn’t feel is should’ve said that with as much confidence as I did.
“Wow man, you’re pretty lucky.” Jack said as his eyes trailed off and fixed on Lisa. I shot him a glare and he took the hint. Even though I wasn’t sure where Lisa and I were, she was still mine.
The bus pulled into the school and Jacks almond eyes lit up with anticipation as he took in the details of where he’d be spending every Monday through Friday for the next two years. I almost forgot about Lisa’s text. I dug through my back pack and felt my phone. I flipped it open to see the text that read:
“meet us at the front stairs babe xx”
The bus came to a stop and there were still about 20 minutes to the first period bell. As we stepped off the bus and were about to split, I turned to Jack before he could get too far. “Hey! Uh, do you wanna come with me and Lisa? We were about to go meet up with a few friends-” Before Jack had an opportunity to answer; Lisa came running off the bus and flung herself around my body. “ALLEEXXX!” I held her waist as she pecked my lips and intertwined our hands. She looked at the unfamiliar boy who awkwardly stood in front of her.
“Who’s this?” Jack stood nervously as Lisa scanned his scrawny figure head to toe. “This is Jack, he’s new. I was just asking him if he wanted to come to the stairs with us and meet everyone and he was about to say yes, right? “Uhh yeah” Jack agreed.
We couldn’t get anywhere near the steps due to the group of 300 kids and growing waiting to be let into school and start the new year, so we took a seat in the student parking lot about 20 feet away. One of the things that sat with me worst about school was the social classifications. People could never just be people here; they had to be put into groups to be judged by. I can’t really tell what I am. My group is pretty much made up of social floaters, stuck somewhere between popular and straight up ‘losers’. Popularity doesn’t really matter to me though. I’m pretty sure not many job applications require for you to tell your social status in high school nowadays, so I’ll be fine.
Lisa anxiously checked her phone every few minutes waiting to see if anyone else we know had shown up yet. Her phone finally buzzed with a message. “RIANS HERE!!!” she squealed causing a few heads to turn. She got another incoming text and blurted the news out for all to hear from that one too. “HE’S WITH ZACK AND MATT TOO!! I’ll tell them to meet us at--”
Lisa was cut off by the first period bell. Dammit, whatever. Lisa disappeared into the crowd to find our friends and left me and Jack with each other. Its gotta be hard to be dropped in a situations where you know literally no one to where everyone else knows everybody—multiple times too. I took Jacks arm and pulled him through the crowd. “C’mon, I’ll help you find first period.”
Jack’s p.o.v
Alex took my arm and I could feel my face burn red even more than when we were on the bus. I would never admit it, but Alex has a lot of attractive qualities… Lisa is very lucky. He’s been so kind to me and is trying to help me, and I really appreciate that. No one back home would’ve ever done this for me. I just hope to hell my feelings don’t fuck up this relationship.
We neared the front doors, and Alex continued to drag me limply behind him up until the threshold.
“Well Jack, welcome to Dulaney High.”
