I was surrounded. At least a dozen, fierce looking warriors cornered me, sharp arrows pointing at my throat, ugly sneers on their faces. "Shoot!" I mumbled and cursed under my breath. "If you say so." The ringleader said. He pulled back his arrow and- "That's enough!" I cried out, throwing the velvet blanket over the mirror. "You asked for it." A voice said teasingly from the mirror. I rolled my eyes. I couldn't stay mad at him. "Hey, I just because I can't see doesn't mean you can roll your eyes at me!" The mirror said. "How dare you be so disrespectful to the mirror of all knowing!" I snorted a very un-ladylike snort. "Of course, your highness! I'm SOO terribly sorry!" I replied sarcastically. I even did a small curtsy. "But in all seriousness, you are getting crowned tomorrow. I'm going to be calling you your highness soon." I sighed, slouching back against the armchair. "What? Don't you want to become queen?" Mirror inquired. "I do." It was the truth. I loved my kingdom with all my heart and I didn't mind the responsibility of it at all. "I just don't want to get married." Mirror was quiet. I didn't want to marry someone because I had to. I was a huge romantic, and I wanted to marry for love. And I knew for sure I wouldn't love any of my suitors because my heart already belonged to someone else. My mom already explained this to me several times that a king needed a queen and a queen needed a king. This was to prevent a tyrannical ruler because if one started getting greedy for power the other could balance him or her out. "Snow?" Mirror called out softly. "Yep?" "Could you maybe remove this hideous piece of cloth from my view?" I grinned and let out a laugh. Mirror always knew how to cheer me up. We would always talk in the morning as I was getting dressed and putting on my makeup and at night when I changed and took off my makeup. Those were my favorite times of day. We chatted and laughed a little more until I drifted off to sleep to the sound of his voice soothing me like warm, thick honey. *** "Wakey, wakey! Eggs and bakey!" Mirror called out. "Shut up!" I grumbled. I grabbed a pillow and tossed it at him. I went back to bed and pulled the rich blue duvet over my head, encasing me in a warm cocoon. I heard the door opening and the creaking of the old wood floor. "Sweetie, it's time to get up! You don't want to be late for your own crowning!" My mom said. She rubbed my shoulder gently and began to sing. And, no, it wasn't the kind of singing that was melodious and made you want to laugh and cry and dance all at once. It was the kind of singing that shattered glass. "Stop!" I begged her, climbing out of bed. Mom smiled and left the room. "You'd think her voice would be better by now." Mirror said jokingly. "Give her a break! She's my mom! And besides she was asleep for a century, her voice is going to be rusty!"I defended. I looked at my gown hanging on a mannequin in a corner. It was simple but elegant royal blue dress with a yellow sash around my waist and draped along the side. I tossed a blanket over the mirror and changed as we chatted, a swarm of butterflies raging in my belly all the while. "How are you feeling?" Mirror asked. "I don't know!? I'm excited and I can't wait, but I also feel like I'm going to throw up and another part of me wants to run away from it all!" I vented to him. I paced back and forth and took off the cloth that had covered him. "Wow. You look amazing." Mirror said looking me over. "Wear the silver necklace from your birthday." He advised. Thank god fashion tips were a part of his job! I would be a mess without him. I went for neutral today, just a dab of eyeshadow to accentuate my honey colored eyes and smudge of lip balm. My lips were naturally very red and my cheeks constantly looked like I was blushing. Beauty were one of the perks of being royals. That and a talking mirror to advise you and help you stay looking good. "Esnowella! What's taking you so long? Everyone's waiting!" My mom called from behind the door. "One sec!" I replied. I looked at Mirror. "Any last pieces of wisdom?" I whispered. "Yes. Trust your instincts and know that there are layers to people." Mirror said solemnly. "What?" "You heard me. Keep that in your mind okay Snow? Be safe. I love you." Mirror said. I nodded. "I will." "Good. Now go out there and make me proud!" Mirror said in a lighter tone. I smiled and left the room to meet up with Mom, praying that I wouldn't make a fool out of myself as clumsy as I was. Here goes nothing. ------------------------------------------------------- Author's Note Hi readers! Thank you for reading Behind the Apple! If you haven't caught on, Esnowella's mom is supposed to be Aurora, a.k.a Sleeping Beauty. (Aurora, my little sis, this is for you.) Also, I want to do a cast list, so comment who you think should be Esnowella, her mom, and Mirror.
