"Good day, I'm Aura."
I look at this girl, who has glittering green eyes, long unkempt red hair, and freckles lightly sprinkled over her nose.
She holds out her pale hand, waiting for me to shake it.
I decide to go with a more casual tone of voice.
"Sup, homie, I'm Aura."
No. Definitely not.
I look at the girl again, who's hand is still up, waiting to be shaken. Who even shakes hands anymore?
Me.
I roll my eyes at myself, turning away from the mirror.
"I'm not gonna make any friends at this rate." I Mumble bitterly, yearning for the comfort and familiarity of my old school.
This year, I'd have to start all over.
Really though, it's not like I left much behind, with the exception of Riley. He was my best friend, my only friend. He also happened to be my step brother. We had been inseparable.
Despite the rumors, we were only friends. Nobody really cared to listen to our protests, they just wanted gossip material. It's been that way since kindergarten.
I smile stupidly at the memory of how we met, how everything started.
A younger Aura sits in a brightly colored classroom, clearly bored out of her mind. All the other students work on spelling words, spelling words Aura completed ten minutes ago.
Boring.
So very boring.
She began to hum to herself, quietly,
the theme to her favorite sci-fi Television Show, Doctor Who.
A young boy, Riley, glanced up from his test sharply, searching for the source of noise. His blue eyes lit up with excitement as he recognized the tune.
He finally made eye contact with Aura and grinned widely.
The two children walked to the pickup line together, each sharing theories and fun facts about the show that linked them. They also discovered both of them were missing a parent.
About a week later, the children had devised a plan to make their parents meet.
Aura's mom, as that's all she had, and Riley's dad.
The two fell in love and got married when Riley and Aura were in the third grade.
I frown slightly remembering why we left. Riley's dad was a liar and a thief. Poor Riley never knew... Even still, we moved, after the grueling process of their divorce.
So now here I am, living in Madison, Wisconsin.
I sigh, leaving the bathroom, still bare from the lack of unpacking. No time to lose myself in the past, I still need to get ready for school.
I choose my battle armour hesitantly. I've always worn my Doctor Who tees, or my Supernatural bracelets, but maybe I could avoid being singled out and go with a green tank with silver earrings?
My silver earrings are the T.A.R.D.I.S.
So, no.
I opt out for a subtle flair of fan. My 'Moriar Tea' t-shirt. Now, fellow fans can understand that I'm one of them, without going all out with my 'Nerd' getup, as my mom calls it.
Finally, I reach across to my nightstand, snatching my black hipster frames. I picked them out last year, and love them. Even though I've got contacts, I typically wear these instead.
"Aura!!!" My mom shrilly calls from downstairs.
"coming!" I respond, slinging my "Bigger on the inside." bag across my back, rushing down the stairs.
May the odds be ever in my favor.
