It was a beautiful sunny day. Not a cloud in the sky. I laid on the grass out side looking up at the lovely sky watching butterflies. It was a perfect distraction from everyday life. Living in a busy town on the sea side is great when you don't have to deal with the drunk sea men and cranky old ladies yelling at you. But since my home was in the main square and my job was working the market or running errands for the hotel I always had to be around them. I was thankful for my days off when I could do what ever I want. But they were few and far between. This is one of my few days off because we are not swamped at home and are about to have to prepare for the winter when we will not be able to harvest food and also tend to the crews that got stuck on our island till spring. We always start planning in the summer to be sure we have everything we need done and grown and preserved in the cellar. It takes us months to gain all the food and supplies to last us all winter and it all starts tomorrow. When the winter hits I will be stuck inside even during my off days so I like to spend as much time out side as possible.
I looked at the sky one last time before standing up off the ground. I think I might go take a walk down by the sea. It is a beautiful day should be fun maybe i will catch some fish for supper. Or gather some berries for desert or to make jam. There were so many things that I could do to enjoy this day. The only problem was deciding which activity I wanted to do. I started to head to the shore. In order to get there you have to go to the very edge of town and then go down the cliff side on a path that was carved many years ago. It is small but wide enough to roll carts up and down for the crews.
As I was walking down the beach side something seemed to catch my eye. It shined in the sun and seemed to glow itself as I neared it. It was the most magnificent thing I had ever seen! It was a pendant on a long chain that looked like gold. The pendant its self was a marvelous blue almost like the sea. And it was shaped almost like a shell.
As I picked it up it did look like half a shell and seemed to glow as I touched it. I was suppose to give anything that could have value to mother for her to sell at the market for a decent price and I knew this would make a pretty penny. But something deep down inside of me told me that I Had to protect this necklace with my life.
I quickly put it on and covered it with my shirt and it seemed to heat up against my skin. It felt right. As if that is where it was suppose to belong. It felt as if it were apart of me that had been missing for some time. But at the same time it still did not feel complete.
I continued on down the beach toward where I knew was a secret berry bush and also the best fishing spot. But as I was walking it seemed like someone was calling me. It sounded very faint but at the same time very near. I stopped to listen to it for a minute to see if I could tell where it was coming from and who it was.
I listened to my name being called and it sounded like it came from the right. But how can that be? To my right was the ocean no one was out there. But it seemed like the sound was coming from the waves. I mean I have always had this weird obsession with the sea. Even when I was little. It just felt like that is where I needed to be at all times.
But now it was like it was really calling my name! I swear I can hear it saying Traydon! And the more that it called the more that I wanted to run it and be embraced by the waves.
But I don't have time for that today! I need to get some stuff for supper ready or mom would be furious. It took everything in me to turn my eyes away from the waves and continue down the beach to the bush.
The entire time that I was walking to the spot where I fish it seemed as if the sea kept reaching out and trying to get to me. It was as if it wanted me to enter it as much as I did. I set up all my fishing equipment that I keep hidden near by and went about collecting the berries. I had been collecting berries for about three minuets when I went to check on my nets. Usually takes about thirty minuets or so for me to get a decent size haul of fish. And they were usually hardly a very decent size. But today the net was full. And they were huge fish!
I was going to need something to help get them all back to the Hotel.
