Blossomstar wailed, draping a light gray tail over the dying deputy. "Please, Redstripe, stay with me." She murmured, licking the dark ginger tomcat's head. He let a raspy, choppy purr escape from his throat. Blood welled from the deep wound in his neck as he did so. Blossomstar pressed her paw against the wound, but it was no use.
"Redstripe, you can't leave me. We were going to have kits, remember?" The leader's voice shook as she stroked the deputy's cheek with her tail. The ginger tom's flank fell still.
Blossomstar let out a thin, anguished cry as she pressed her speckled nose in to her mate's fur. His body already grew stiff and cold. She let her paws rest on his side as her shoulders bounced from soft, muffled sobs.
The two cats lay on the border between ShadowClan and WindClan. Grass tickled Blossomstar's paws, and wind buffeted at her neck fur. She shivered from the cool breeze. Warriors and apprentices stood near her, their heads bowed in grief. All because of a border skirmish. Those evil WindClan cats will pay.
Blossomstar lifted her head up to the darkening sky, and saw a bright twinkle of a star. Redstripe.
Pinefall nudged the leader's cheek. The elder warrior mumbled a soft apology, her breath tickling Blossomstar's ear fur.
"It wasn't your fault," the light gray leader whispered, her eyes full of saddness. "It was that WindClan cat... the quick black she-cat. I will make her and her Clan pay," Blossomstar hisses.
The deceased deputy smelt of heather as two apprentices, Blackpaw and Rainpaw, lay the purple flowers on to the red tabby's pelt. His comforting scent was gone, so Blossomstar got up on shaky paws. Her whiskers drooped.
"How are your wounds?" The grief-stricken leader quietly inquires to the cats near her. It was her duty to make sure they were well. She scanned the warriors, and noted Shrewtail's torn ear, the tom pawing it every few seconds.
A deep gash ran from Icetail's shoulder to her tail. The white she-cat seemed to be blind with pain, her eyes glazed over, but she hid it well. "Icetail, you must visit Shadefur's den at once."
Shadefur was the medicine cat. The black and white tom was well respected, not just in ShadowClan, but all the Clans. Blossomstar knew he should be in the elder's den, but no kits have shown interested in herbs, so he must work.
Pinefall and Blackpaw led Icetail through the pine forest and marsh. Shrewtail followed them.
Blossomstar lowered her ears, and crouched. She heaved the heavy, cold body of her mate onto her shoulders.
"Do you need help?" Rainpaw asks gingerly, her tail twitching impatiently. Blossomstar gives a simple shake of her head, but she was lying. Death caused a cat to be much heavier, Blossomstar realized. She stared straight ahead as she padded into the forest full of sap, her heart numb.
