"Earth skills sucks man!" Marcus smiled. Jake Griffin was a genius, there was no denying that. He could solve any equation, recite any poem, but for the life of him he could not start a fire. "You'll get it eventually, besides its not as if we'll ever need earth skills." Jake frowned,"Is that supposed to cheer me up?" They reached their packed common room and flopped down on the two remaining couches. Marcus was exhausted. It was his last year of school and he needed to figure out what he was going to do with his so-called life. He had already ruled out anything with engines, injections or children. Which really didn't leave much else but the Guard. He couldn't really see himself as a guard, they all seemed heartless. And bald. He sighed loudly. Before Jake could question him about it the door of the common room swung open to reveal the seething Abigail Reed. Marcus, thankfully, was not at the receiving end of her death glare. "JAKE GRIFFIN!" She stomped over to the couch Jake was sprawled on. "Yes, princess?" Marcus winced, that was definitely the wrong move. All eyes were on them and everyone was waiting for Abby to unleash her wrath. Her temper was legendary, people said it was because of her Celtic heritage. Marcus said it was because of idiots. She noticed people noticing and calmly composed herself. "Can I have a word in private please?" Jake grinned "of course." He followed her out of the room with his usual swagger, not in the least bit worried about the earful he was going to get. The three of them had been bestfriends since they were 7 years old, which meant that Jake was quite accustomed to these lectures. Not that that stopped Abby giving them. Marcus waited for a half an hour for them to come back but neither one of them did. He wondered if he should be searching for Jake's corpse but decided that he was probably nursing his ego in front of a mirror somewhere. Marcus stood up and almost fell over a chair on his way out. "Graceful as ever", he muttered to himself. He was about to make his way back to his family's chambers when he remembered that they had a history project due for tomorrow on Donald Trump. He had left it to last minute as usual, he hated history. He stalked back to the classroom, cursing the year 2016, to find Abby's neck being assaulted by Jake's mouth.  Her hands were in his hair. His hands were on her waist. Marcus felt a sharp pang in his side. He backed out of the room silently, wishing he was anywhere else on the stupid Ark. Hell, even earth didn't seem too unappealing at the moment. He felt betrayed. But there was something else he couldn't put his finger on. He felt empty, like something had been ripped out of him. He had changed the past few months. He noticed things. He noticed how Abby's eyes sparkled when she laughed. He noticed how his pulse quickened whenever she was close. He noticed how whenever she smiled his stomach  felt funny. And after 6 months 12 days and 4 hours of being blind, Marcus could see. He was in love with Abby Reed, and now
there was absolutely nothing he could do about it.
