Chapter 1

I was running. To where ... I didn't know. My lungs burned, my legs grew heavy, and perspiration was running down my face. But I kept pushing myself to keep going. The next thing I saw was black. I woke up to see white. White walls, white floors, and then I saw him. He was leaning against the wall with a look of determination but also sorrow. Yet once he saw me awake the determined look took over his whole face as if someone had wiped his face clean of any pity he felt for me. Then the events if the past hours came back to me. Passing out, being carried to a strange building, and then for a brief moment I saw a man who gave me a shot. I felt my body go limp and then I was out cold. The boy appeared to be about 16 the same age as me. His face softened when he saw me struggling to sit up my muscles still limp but he didn't give me any assistance. He looked up and I saw what he had looked at. I saw a camera this frightened me. But once my eyes got adjusted to the bright light I took in my surroundings. All I saw was a bed, a table and some sort of scanner. I decide that since there seemed to be no exit I might as well get to know the mysterious boy. I introduced myself but he just stared back blankly. It took me a minute to realize he was in paralytic shock. All of a sudden a mix of emotions flooded his face as if memories were coming back to him. Then I noticed the two electrodes a attached to his palms. It was almost as if he was being controlled. Then he attacked. As he chased me around the room I realized my chance of escape was getting slimmer by the second. Just then I saw the door. It was invisible when you looked at it from every angle except for one. And I had just found that angle. I waited for him to circle around. Right before he attacked I jumped out of the door and quickly locked him inside.
I looked down the hall and seeing no one I ran. Suddenly I was back in the freakish events of the  night before. I saw a guard and ducked into a room off of the hallway I was in. I saw many things our government called computers. I had to remind myself to stay calm. MacKenzie so long as you keep you'll be fine. Not soon after I had spoken these words than I heard voices. I recognized one of them as the vice president. At least that's what he was called when the United States was a whole country. After the Great War of The States many southeastern states such as Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina succeeded to form what they call a "stronger union" but my parents believe we were stronger all together we are now forced to live under tyranny. Whilst we are expected to fight for "our country". As I listen on to these men talk I hear talk of war, poverty line and even higher taxes for everyone except for of course, the government officials themselves. My family although we own and operate many businesses we are not considered rich. Because my father is not a "military man". After I hear footsteps gradually decrease I finally step out of the locker I was hiding in. I notice a guard's outfit. Perfect. I grab the outfit and quickly change. As I step out into the hallway I see another guard and walk by him as fast as possible. He made no second glance at me. Yes, no one recognizes me. I made it down to the first floor. Once I cleared the door I broke into a sprint. I briefly remembered my family and considered going back to them but then I realized that my mould just be putting them in danger. After hours my body shakes with exhaustion. I find myself outside of inn and walk in. The lady at the front desk, if you could even call it that, handed me a key and went back to reading her magazine. I found an old woman in the room. She not only refused to call me M as I requested but also over and over called me The Chosen OneI slipped into the outfit. Yes! It was just my size. I ran into the hallway and spotted a guard. I slowed my pace to match his and continued on. He looked over at me but didn't give a second glance. I rode a high-speed elevator down to the first floor without anyone noticing. Once I cleared the door I broke into a sprint. Then I remembered my family. I'm not going to lie I nearly went back to them. Just to breathe in the scent of coffee from my mom and seeing my dad's easy smile would have made me feel safe. But I didn't want to risk endangering them. So instead I kept running.     After hours exhaustion overtook me. I surveyed my surroundings and saw an old rundown inn. I walked inside and asked for a room. I had to repeat my request three times before I was answered. The lady simply handed me a key and went back to reading her magazine. I walked up a rickety old staircase just to find walls with so many cracks roaches and mold had made it their home. I saw two doors and tried the key in the one on the left. Nothing. I turned and inserted the key into the second keyhole. Pop! A perfect fit. I walked in to see empty soups cans and half a loaf of bread. Great a roommate. I had never been very good at sharing a house with my two brothers. So I had no clue how this would work. All of a sudden an old woman popped up from behind a rotting sofa. She insisted on calling me The Chosen One instead of my preference M. At this point I didn't know who I could trust. So I decided not to tell her my real name. That night I awoke t a sound that sounded like a knock on the door. I heard them say "Military Men open up". So I grabbed my things and slipped out into the night.
I forgot that I was on the second floor and I dropped to the ground like a dead weight. But I got moving when I heard "Search the premises she could be anywhere." As I ran along the countryside I smelled something that I recognized like when my father cooked something on the grill. A shiver ran through my body although it was a cool night. One word came to mind. Fire!  I ran and I ended up in an old woman's basement. I know right. Another old lady. She said she was part of the protection group. She said that she was supposed to take care of me until she was six feet under. All of a sudden I heard sirens loud and clear ringing. Run. She said. RUN!
