Four's P.O.V

A knock at my door accompanied by a yell yanks me from my sleep. "Dude wake up!" Zeke's voice pierces the haze of grogginess surrounding my thoughts.

I open my eyes and groan. The choosing ceremony is today, which means I'm supposed to be waiting for the initiates by the net. Instead of which I'm lying in bed with a killer hangover. Fuck.

I stretch my arms above my head lazily and let them fall back down beside me."Yeah man I'll be there in a sec," I shout in response as I try to sit up

"Let's go train some idiots," I say aloud to myself in motivation. I glance at the clock and curse when I see the time. I jump out of bed and head towards the bathroom. The warm water of the shower massages my back and I rake my fingers through my hair. I tilt my head back and let the water run over my face. I wince as the throbbing in my head reminds me of the night before. Games of Dare with Zeke and the others are fun at the time, but the next morning? Not so much.

I barely have time to brush my teeth and pull on a plain black t-shirt, black jeans and boots before I'm rushing out the door. I catch my reflection in the mirror as I leave and damn, I need a shave. Oh well.

I slot into the line of trainers between Zeke and Shana, and hope that no one notices how late I am. It doesn't look like anyone has jumped yet, so I should be off the hook.

"Bro, you're so lucky Eric is held up in a meeting with Max , he would have skinned you," Zeke half speaks half whispers to me.

I snorted. Eric and I were initiates together, and he'd despised me from the get go. He's a snake, and I'll admit that his cunning gets him far in life. But when it comes down to a plain fight, or even a test of knowledge or courage, he and I both know I can beat him every time.
"I'd like to see him try," I respond.

"Yeah well you gave him the power to do whatever he want when you gave up leadership," Shana interrupts.

I roll my eyes. Here we go.

"Now that he's a leader he can say and do whatever he wants. Honestly Four, you're such an idiot! Why didn't you just - ow!" I elbow her in the stomach when I spot Eric enter the room.

"Right. The first jumper will be any second now," Eric says sharply. "Upon Max's orders, Shana, Zeke and Stacy will take the three groups of Dauntless born," Eric's eyes pierce mine as he turns his gaze to me.

"And upon my orders, Four will take the transfers". He says, making sure that I know who's in charge.

I'm not surprised, I've been in charge of training transfers for the past two years, and I've grown to quite like it. I guess I understand what they're going through. And they're far more easily intimidated, which is always fun.

"I have important matters to attend to, so I'm off. I trust you don't need me to hold your hand," he says before he turns on his heel and leaves.

I wait, chatting with Zeke and Shana for a few more minutes before we hear Emmet shouting down to us that the first jumper is coming. I turn my attention to the opening in the roof just in time to see a blur of grey fall and be engulfed by the net.

I am astounded. Abnegation? There hasn't been a single Abnegation transfer since me, and there weren't any for years before that.

The person bounces a few times, and I realise that they are... laughing? I am enchanted by the sound of it, it's like the sound of dozens of bells ringing. And from the pitch of it, a girl's voice.

Zeke nudges me "Can't see much, but looks like one of yours dude".

"Oh, right," I say, walking over to the net. I yank the edge down towards me, and the person is sent rolling towards the edge. She stops and sits up.

That's when I first lay eyes on her, and I'm absolutely intoxicated. She is the most stunningly beautiful girl I've ever seen. I stare at her, my eyes taking in her features. She has long dark brown hair, and the loose waves frame her face, like a precious artwork. Her eyes are fierce and cat like, her dark and shapely eyebrows perfectly compliment her shining green irises. My vision trails down her small and cute nose and over to her sharp and high cheekbones. I linger on her full...sexy lips. I press my eyes shut. Stop. She's an initiate and you've been staring at her for ages, do something! I open my eyes. "Welcome to Dauntless," I manage to get out, though it is somewhat croaky.

She wobbles on the net and grabs my arm for balance. My breath hitches, her touch is electric. I put my arm around her small waist and lift her off the net. I struggle to remove my hand from her, but as soon as I do I feel colder than before.

I feel a connection to her, like she is the oxygen I need to breath. I would be anything, do anything, say anything, to make her safe and happy. What the fuck is wrong with me, it's like I'm in love or something. That sounds a bit fucking stupid, I've only just seen her. Is love at first sight even a real thing? Whilst I have only a small amount of experience with romance, I know that nothing I could ever feel would compare to this. This it it for me. She is it for me. Christ I haven't even spoken a single word to her.

"What's your name?" I ask, my eyes locked with hers.

"It's B- uhhh... it's um..." She stammers.

The corners of my mouth lift. I remember coming to Dauntless and wanting to leave everything behind, including my name.

"You can pick a new one if you like, but make it good. You don't get to pick again," I encourage her.

She pauses, and then answers "Tris. My name's Tris".

I just smile and we look into each other's eyes. I wonder what she's thinking. I have this feeling like her external beauty is the first of many exquisite layers, and I pray that I get the chance to unravel them. I have this exciting feeling, like she is the most important person I will ever meet.

Zeke clears his throat. I'm just standing here not saying anything, this must look pretty weird.

Reluctantly I tear my gaze from hers and turn to the crowd of Dauntless gathered to watch the jumpers. I yell "First jumper - Tris!"

Woo hoo second chapter 😬 At the moment I am mainly writing this book for myself, it's basically just the freaky workings of my mind, and what divergent would have been like if I wrote it. Maybe other people will enjoy it too 😂 Also, Tris's physical appearance is clearly quite different in my version, which kinda undermines the whole point of their attraction/love in the original book but oh well. As you can tell, their love is quite different too, much more intense.
Thanks for reading! :)
