" Mridhu, don't you think you should take a break?" my assistant nurse asked me. " You've been dealing with a lot of cases today. "
" I know Karishma," I told her with a sigh. " But my heart goes out to all these injured animals and I just can't walk away. Just one more. Then I will go for my lunch break."
She just looked at me and gave me the all-knowing glance. After being with me for a year already, she knew that if I said one more, it would be 3.
I just loved my profession. I liked being around animals, since it gave me a sense of calm. Knowing that I was the one who was responsible for treating them and relieving them of their distress gave me a sense of satisfaction.
" Next, " she called.
And I was so glad that I hadn't left for an early break as she had asked me to. Because, the man who walked in blew the air right out of my lungs.
He held a Labrador puppy in his arms, cradling it to his chest as he walked inside.
My eyes which had taken a subtle glance at him, returned to gaze at the puppy's injured leg as duty called. I couldn't waste my time staring at handsome strangers. My job was to be a responsible, hard working doctor.
" Yes?" I asked the boy standing across me. " How did it happen?"
"He was running in the house and knocked over a glass vase. A small shard tore through his right limb. I don't think it is very deep but I am assuming he needs stitches?"
For a moment, I was mesmerised my the husky tone of his voice and I wanted to hear more.
" How old is he?"
" Two."
I could have easily guessed considering that I had a dog myself. But I had just wanted to hear his voice.
Snap out of it, I scolded myself.
I turned around to see Karishma giving me a bemused look.
I got back into action.
" Bring the needle, some thread and cotton, gauze and a towel," I told her, getting into the all-too familiar routine I was used to.
I lay the puppy on a small bed and examined the wound. It wasn't so deep like the man had said and so it needed only a few stitches.
I took the wet cloth from Kari and wiped the wound dry. Then I applied pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding when the dog whimpered.
" Shhhhh," I whispered, gently caressing it under its chin and it calmed to my touch.
When I was sure it was okay enough, I started the procedure and put two stitches, closing the wound.
I wrapped the dog's leg with a bandage and gave the man a few instructions.
" Don't let him lick the wound. Make sure that he doesn't raise that leg. There's nothing major to worry about. As far as possible, don't take him for too many walks. Come after a week to remove the stitches."
I was looking at my notepad and scribbling the name of some powder while saying all this. When I looked up to acknowledge the man, I felt a jolt in my heart.
He was staring right at me, and a blush began to colour my cheeks.
But I decided to act professional and ignore the weird feelings.
" Here Sir, " I said, handing him the prescription. Just then, I noticed that he was dressed in formal attire. He had on a dark blue shirt, black pants and a dark blue coat. Seemed like he was in a hurry to go somewhere.
My eyes involuntarily went up to gaze at his high cheekbones and his brown orbs, which were still looking at me, as if trying to gauge my reaction as to what I would do next.
He looked amused for some odd reason. Then he smiled, took the piece of paper dangling from my fingers, scooped up his dog and left without saying a word. Not even a thank you.
I looked at his back, my mouth dropped open when Karishma cleared her throat.
" I think you really need a rest after all that Mridhu," she said giving me a cheeky grin. " Come, " she said nudging my shoulder. " Let's go for a coffee. We have a lot to talk about."
I dazedly followed her out of my clinic, wondering why I felt so flustered all of a sudden.
Phew! It had definitely been a long, tiring and one of the most eventful days.
