1~ What About Now?

Depuis le début

"I think Scarlet's pregnant, but she won't say anything." Daisy mumbled. Mia frowned, slipping out of the booth.

"Stand up." She ordered, grabbing my arm. I let out a shaky breath and joined her in front of the table. She touched my stomach gently, as if it would tell her if I was or not.

"Have you taken any tests? Do you know if River forgot to use protection? Have you had morning sickness or-"

"All right, Mama Mia." Daisy cut in, laying the money and tip on the table.

"I don't think Scarlet wants you going full Mommy mode on her. She's already having a hard enough time trying to see if she is, Mia. Let her handle it on her own." I fought the urge to throw my arms around my best friend and thank her.

"Okay. If you need me at all before Sunday, Scarlet, just give me a call." She kissed my cheek before doing the same to Daisy and walking out of the diner.

"She is so Mommy-like sometimes." Daisy joked as we made our way out the door. I nodded, but found myself jumping to Mia's defense.

"Yeah, but sometimes it isn't such a bad thing. Especially when the two of us need a motherly hug ourselves."

**

"I found it." River said, holding the remote in his hand in victory. I cracked a smile, falling on to the couch beside him. Our Husky mix, Nik, stumbled toward us, barking.

"Oh no." River gasped, pointing his finger at the four month old dog, "Don't you dare jump up here!" But Nik disobeyed the order and jumped on to the white couch with us anyway, finally earning a laugh out of me.

"Mommy is so mean." River grumbled, pushing Nik on to my lap, "She's laughing at me." Nik plopped down on me as if he were only twenty pounds and started licking his paws.

"So we need to talk." River finally said, shifting his body to face me. "About the test." I nodded in agreement, running my fingers through Nik's thick fur.

"W. . . we need to go see a OB/GYN. Scarlet, we need to know if the test was faulty or something or if. . . if-"

"If I'm actually pregnant." I finished for him, "I know, River. I. . . I'm just scared. What am I supposed to tell Kelly or my dad, or my brothers? I'm only twenty two, I'm not ready to have a baby." He reached over and squeezed my hand, smiling sadly.

"I know, Carls. But we can do this together. If you're pregnant, then we'll become ready. This is our baby, not yours, ours." I started to shake my head, but he took my face in his hands, his blue eyes bright.

"And if you want to give it up, if you really don't think you're ready, then that's okay too. But I know deep down that you'd be an amazing mother." Just as I was ready to responded, Nik jumped up and started to lick my face, his tail hitting River's face so hard that he jumped up and forced Nik on to the ground.

I fell back on to the couch in laughter, covering my mouth before I could start snorting.

"Oh, so you think this is funny, huh?" River sat back on the couch, pulling me against him. He kissed me, and in that moment I was glad to have every thought slip from my mind and fade into nothing.

*

I woke up in the middle of the night to whining. I slipped out of River's tight grip around me and walked over to the bedroom door to find Nik pawing at it.

"What's wrong, bud?" I asked him, but before I could pet him he darted out the door and ran to the front one, scratching at it and whining even more. I turned on the kitchen light, wrapping my rope tighter around myself as I unlocked the door and pulled it open.

"Nik!" I cried out when he took off into the night. I ran down the stairs, screaming for him. I could hear him start barking, but right as I took off I tripped over a branch and fell to the ground.

"River!" I screamed, feeling a sharp pain spreading through my leg. "River!"

I could still hear Nik barking, but it was faint considering my heart and breathing were the only thing I could hear.

"Carls?" River leaned out of the house, a confused look on his face.

"I. . . I think I broke my leg." I replied, trying to move again. He jogged down the stairs, his eyes narrowing toward the woods.

"Where's Nik?" He asked, kneeling down and touching my leg.

"He was whining so I thought he had to go ou-ouch! River, stop." I pushed his hand away, tears stinging my eyes.

"It's okay." He slid his hand under my back, smiling down at me, "You probably just sprained it or something. Everything is fine." I nodded, wanting to believe him, but I couldn't.

This wasn't the way I wanted to start out the year, the weekend of my brothers wedding. I just had to pray to myself that this weekend wouldn't get any worse.
