It was a lovely summer evening just like any other summer evening. Michael was waiting for his first day of school in New York. He had lived in Regina, Saskatchewan at first, but then his family moved to New York for better job opportunities. When they had moved, Michael only knew one person in New York. His older brother, Nick. Nick had been in New York for a few years now, he knew the best restaurants, the easiest roads, the cheapest shops, and the best apartments. Michael had known about Nick, but never actually met him until they moved. Nick was his step-brother, which meant that he was born with different parents, Michaels parents, Michelle and Tony, were married after Michelle had been divorced, she had been married to a man named Alex, while they were married, they had Nick, and when they were divorced, Nick went with his dad to New York.

As Michael was staring out of the window of their new apartment, he wondered what Nick would be doing right then, he wondered if he would even recognize him, when Michael was born, Nick was only 9 years of age, of course, Michael did not remember this, he only knew it because his parents had told him about their lives before he was born. Michael sometimes wondered if they were insulting him, talking about the past so much, it felt as if they were telling him "Go die! It was better without you!" He knew it wasn't true, he just wondered.
"Mike!" called his dad as he walked in the apartment door,
"What's up, dad?" he called back,
"Come help your mother lift the TV!" his dad replied,
"Hold on a sec! I'm coming!" shouted Michael as he walked down the stairs to the main floor, he grasped the sides and bottom of the TV and lifted it with ease. As he and Michelle carried it up the stairs, he noticed a little hinge on one of the steps,
"What is it munchkin?" asked his mother as she noticed him looking at the stairs,
"Oh, I dunno, its nothing," he said, curious. When they got to the top and set it down, he ran back to the stair he saw it on.
"Michael dear!" his mom called,
"Hold on mom! I'll be there right away!" he shouted back as he examined the step. He saw that there was a hinge on each side, he grabbed it at the end, and lifted it open. He choked as the dust sprayed aggressively at his face, when it cleared, he saw the entertainment of his childhood, the sight made him choke even more, then he passed out.
